Annual General Party

Get ready for a great night at Friday’s Annual General Party. You’re not going to want to miss it – with music, dinner, and dancing (along with a wee bit of official business) it’s sure to be an evening that goes down in DBSC’s history books! The formalities kick off at 7pm. You should have received an emailed invite last Wednesday. Please make sure you’ve RSVPed for yourself and your partner. If you haven’t received the invite and still want to come along, please email secretary@dbsc.com.au and let Clare Alexander know.

DATES NEEDED FOR PRO / COTD ROSTER

We are in the process of creating the PRO/COTD Roster for next season with the aim of a release ahead of the August restart. To help avoid any unnecessary changes to the roster, please advise Mark Crowhurst of any dates on which you will be unavailable by e-mailing him at treasurer@dbsc.com.au. We appreciate your help with this.

New Boat License Course - June 24th

Due to overwhelming demand, we will be running another 1-day boat licence course at DBSC on June 24th, provided by ABC Boating and supported by the club. Members will need to pay $125 to participate in the course and the club will subsidise the other 50%. All members should have this licence to perform PRO or COTD duties. Spots will be allocated on a first-in basis. To register please click here. 

The weather policy on the day is go unless it's dangerous (e.g. lightning).  If you can't attend, it will be your obligation to find an alternate. If you don't attend without covering your spot, you will be expected to cover the club's contribution on your behalf. You will need to provide your licence details to us for our records once you have obtained it. If you do not, we may request funds from you to cover the club's contribution.

Please note we are trialling purchases through our own web store, so you will notice this registration link takes you to the DBSC website. We may roll this registration and payment system out to other club events depending on the results of the trial. Sunday Winter Championship

Heats 4-6 of the Winter Championship take place this Sunday. Once again the weather looks like it will cooperate with a decent breeze and warmish temps (especially considering the recent cold snap). There will be a briefing at 7:45am for an 8am (at the latest) splash. Racing starts promptly at 8:30am. The Brett Beyer Winter Program also starts this week for those who’ve signed up for it.  

If you are sailing this week please be very careful not to disturb the lawn resurfacing! The new irrigation and turf are scheduled to be laid this week. Please do not wheel boats on the lawn area, except in a corridor as marked.  BE VERY CAREFUL not to disturb levels if not yet turfed AND NOT TO DISTURB FRESHLY LAID TURF if it has been laid!!  This is particularly important as it will have just gone down.  No hosing anywhere near the turf (we don’t want any salt water anywhere near it).  No rigging, derigging or hosing on the concrete semi-circle outside the club. All rigging and de-rigging is to be done on the beach.  Fold sails either on your boat or on the front deck of the club.  Thanks for your help in making the Council’s returfing project a success. We look forward to seeing you bright and early on Sunday!

Annual General Party (AGP)

Who needs an AGM when you can have an AGP instead? That’s right, our Annual General Meeting scheduled for Friday 25 May has officially been renamed the Annual General Party. Sure, there will be some necessary formalities at the start of the evening, but they’ll be over in no time and the bulk of the night will be all about having fun. So, bring along your partners for a great catered dinner followed by singing, dancing and a night of entertainment and surprizes – all at no cost! You will be receiving and official invite to the evening soon. Please RSVP by 21 May.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a few of our talented members playing a cover set. They are looking for a brave soul to join them on the mouth organ for a cameo. If you’re interested, please let our Commodore know.

URGENT – Lawn Resurfacing Rules

If you’ve been down to the club recently, you’ve seen that council is undertaking a major resurfacing project on our lawn rigging area. We have worked with council to maintain access to our club by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of rules for boat rigging and derigging. If we do not abide by these rules WE WILL HAVE NO ACCESS AT ALL. Please carefully read and uphold the following rules:

• Rigging and derigging ONLY on the beach; hosing ONLY on the boat ramp and closest half of the concrete semi-circle at the top
• NO dollies (including spare ones) are to be placed on the lawn area.  Spare dollies should be stacked CAREFULLY on the lino area inside the clubhouse and on the left-hand side of the concrete semi-circle outside the clubhouse, continuing inside the clubhouse as needed, but not blocking any racks, and leaving a one-boat width access corridor to and from the clubhouse
• Wheel dollies carefully over the lawn area, keeping as close as possible to the sea wall and minimising disturbance to the ground
• We suggest folding of sails should occur on the front deck (or on your boat deck)
• The beach to the east of the 18 footers is available if access to the DBSC beach is too difficult or crowded – access via the path to the north and east of the Steyne Park dinghy racks
• The concrete semi-circle above the second, western-most boat ramp is also available, but can be accessed only from the beach

Thanks for your help and understanding with these requirements. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-July. It is vital that we work with council and are a good community partner. 

A greener future is in store. 

Winter Series Race Results

A crystal blue sky, warm May temps, and a decent 10 to 12 knot westerly breeze enticed a fleet of over 25 sailors to participate in the opening heats of the first ever DBSC Winter Series last Sunday. The racing started promptly at 8:30am (causing some of the fleet to miss the first race) and we were off the water by 10:30am to enjoy some hot tomato soup on the deck courtesy of Paul Adam and Peter Collie. A shorter course and a combined fleet start (with the Radials starting one minute ahead of the standard rigs) made for a competitive and fun morning of racing. The winners for the day were, Full Rigs: Rod Barnes (heats 1 and 2), Anthony Scaly (heat 3); Radials: David Rogers (heat 1), Peter Heywood (heats 2 and 3). Full results are now available in the results section of our website. Thanks to Ian Alexander, Pippa Batchelor and Simon Stone for putting on a great day of early morning competition. 

The next instalment of the Winter Series will be on Sunday 20 May. A few things to remember if you’re racing with us in this series:

• Briefing time is 7.45am – rig and change before then
• Recommend splash at 8am LATEST – so you don’t miss the first race!
• Starts will have a horn sounded every minute – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 (SIs will be updated to reflect this).  If a horn is missed, the start will still proceed
• No other change to the starts – Radials start on 1 and Standards on 0.  Flags will remain unchanged from existing SIs
• There was discussion about removing the wing mark in a westerly – this will NOT occur. The course will remain as published
• The Brett Beyer Winter Program starts for the next races on 20 May – if you've signed up for this program, be early to get your GPS units and bibs and RETURN BIBS AFTER SAILING
• After sailing we have soup and bread, thanks to Paul Adam and Peter Collie – please stay and enjoy that on the front deck
• Max Dzhura will have results available about 30min after boats are derigged and results will be published on the website
• If you are a member and are planning to sail more than a few times, but are not rostered as PRO/COTD/Co-COTD (which you will know if you have not already received an email from Mark Crowhurst), please be fair to your clubmates and let us know
