There's a dingy stored on the rear deck, outside on the end of the racks. We don't know who owns it, so suspect it might be a squatter. We are open to being corrected: If it is yours, please contact the commodore before its removed.

NOTE: This humble correspondant will be abroad for a month on a private pilgrimage to foster and improve relations between Australia and the peoples of northern and eastern Europe.

SUB EDITOR NOTE: Is he really just trying to get an early season base tan? Or is this an attempt to study the impact of the temporary lift in the average IQ of both continents?

Working bee. Saturday 1 August

Guest User

Help celebrate all equine birthdays and the start of the new seasons sailing with a working bee.  We've got a list of jobs required to get the club and sailing gear in tip top shape for the season.  Tasks include:

  • splicing ropes for new buoys and tackle
  • installing new cables on Davits
  • clearing the rear deck of old dollies and flotsam
  • tidying the centre of engineering excellence
  • repairing a hole in the men's change room wall (so the ladies can't spy on the boys...we know they all want to)
  • stocking new fridges, chucking old ones out
  • loading your friendly scrap dealer's truck with unwanted/unclaimed metal and rubbish

We'll start at 9, and will be done by 12, to allow people to rig, eat and be sailing by 1pm

Please let rear.commodore@dbsc.com.au or property@dbsc.com.au if you have some special skills to contribute.  If you don't, just turn up as there is lots of manual work and painting to do!

We're still looking for a RIB captain

Guest User

Over the past few years we've had a regular volunteer who was happy to come down and drive a RIB each Saturday. Last season you will recall Adrian who fled the home country and enjoyed Saturday afternoons eating a toastie on the deck then he drove the Paul Adam around the harbour, keeping an eye on us all.  Occasionally he helped with a rescue.

Adrian has returned home to crap food and balmy 7 degree summer days, but will be escaping the worst of the northern hemisphere winter and will be rejoining us in February!  Stock the canteen!  Good stuff.

But we are still on the lookout for another RIB driver.  Qualifications are minimal:

  • Boat licence (or willingness to get one)
  • Reliable
  • A Hat (we'll lend you one)
What could be finer than cruising the harbour in our RIB? We'll even lend you a hat

Do you know anyone who  might want to help out from 1pm on Saturdays?  Doesn't have to be every week, we'll take all offers.

If you do, please drop a note to Michael;  vice.commodore@dbsc.com.au

YA Insurance Programme

Secretary

3rd party insurance is a requirement of sailing with DBSC.  Many sailors "self insure" their own boat, but you need coverage in case you happen to hit and sink the latest carbon fibre mini-maxi.

YA have created a special third party insurance deal that DBSC recommends to all its other members, the NSW Laser community and the rock stars who frequently crash our race program.

In non-PDS speak, here are the deals:

  • $50 per annum for $10m of liability cover only; or,
  • $200 per annum for $10k boat cover and $10m liability cover.

But that is not all....each time a DBSC member signs up, the club gets $10.00.  Not a lot but it is better the club gets the commission than some greedy insurance broker.  We've banked two sets of commissions and here's proof:

Speaking on behalf of NSW Laser community, the People's Prince commented:

"Once the Penguin is healed and back on the water, every Laser sailor can go out safely in the knowledge when the inevitable collision with occurs, that you are covered for serious damage.  This development will help grow the sport, and encourage more kiddies to participate"

Fees, Please

Guest User

Madame Secretary has sent out reminders to the slow payers among you all.  While we all appreciate her more gentle approach compared to previous seasons, the fact is we need the dosh. Now.  Rumour has it that the Treasurer is threatening to "ask" (ie demand) his bank's juniors to allocate some of their "spare time" (ie bedtime) to a special pro-bono program. (Collect DBSC fees).

Please pay your fees. Let the bankers sleep.  And you need to be paid up to score points.

On a serious note, if you've got an issue that you'd like to discretely discuss, please do with either Claire or me (Luke) and we'll work something out to accommodate you.  Radio silence will just get us upset and lead to more sleepless nights for bankers, and nobody wants grumpy bankers.

Don't make the treasurer (make his junior bankers) beg

Dollies and junk outside - remove it or lose it

Guest User

There's a stack of items on the rear deck.

The good, the bad and the ugly

The good, the bad and the ugly

It's not just an eyesore, but it's also a hazard as the fire doors are blocked. It's got to be cleaned up.

As far as I can determine they are a few different types of items:

  • Club's trailer for RIBs. This stays
  • Club's road trailer for taking lasers to regattas. This also stays
  • Broken club owned dollies that have to be repaired and returned inside the club
  • Broken privately owned dollies. These won't be repaired by the club, and the assumption is that they are scrap. If you want yours, either repair it or take it home
  • Oversized privately owned dollies. If they won't hang up inside, they've got to go
  • Broken sailing equipment. Assuming this is scrap

At the 1 August working bee, one task will to repair the club's dollies, stack the trailers and load out the other items onto a truck that will be taking them to a scrap metal yard I happen to know about. If you want to keep you dolly that is now outside, you need to repair it or remove it prior to 1 August.

DBSC welcomes the visually impaired

Guest User

Your committee has splurged on new buoys and tackle. As you can see below, they're big enough to see from Pluto, so our visually impaired and/or aged members have no excuses.  Orange for the roundings, Red for the start.

A newer buoy with an older boy

A newer buoy with an older boy

One of the tasks for the 1 August working bee will be to fit tackle, retrieval lines etc. please come and help.

Helping the visually impaired to take up sailing continues the fine DBSC tradition of making sailing accessible to as many minority or disadvantaged groups as possible.
