Kingston wrap up

Webmaster

With a number of DBSC members attending the 2015 Laser World Masters' ("LWM") Championships, we thought you may want to peruse the results: click here.  or here for some good photos and an article.  Spoiler:  Congratulations to Mark Bethwaite, Rob Lowndes and Brett Beyer

However, our IT supporters, Sergey and Larry, have been kind enough to do a search of all the Chinese websites to find regatta postings and did the translations: enjoy the Chinese perspective.

Day 7 and wrap up

Dear Leader beat a yapie on count back in the Great Grand Master standards to grab 1st - this continues one of the many well known, and friendly, antipodean rivalries .

Wawny had a credible 8th in the same group.

DBSC member's favourite uber coach, Brett Beyer, was unchallenged in the standard age, standard rig. Rob Lowndes from Middle Harbour saluted the judges in GGM radials.

Honorary member, Zoolander, delivered a 2nd in the apprentice radial class.

Wawny

Day 6

"After a lay day yesterday.   Dear Leader "won" two, second in one then had a win taken off him for a premature start.  Two points in it. Spectators rioted, while mumblings of "Indian bookmakers" were heard deep into the night.

Day 4

"Gusty, shifty N breeze off the land today which made for something of a crapshoot in both races, but DBSC's Dear Leader finished 2nd and ahead of the main challenger from RSA in both races, so now 4 points ahead on the leaderboard."

Speaking on behalf of the Antipodean competitors, Wawny clarified the relatively poor number of entries: "We don't do lakes."

Day 3 later

"Grasshopper 2.0 cried when he heard about the OCS."

"Protestors storm the clubhouse with umbrellas as the most shocking news to come out of this year's LMW is that golf on the lay day (tomorrow Wed) cancelled as we missed two races on Monday."

Day 3

Apologies for radio silence but no races yesterday (Mon) as no wind.  Three today. Our Dearest Paramount Leader (ed: must be a translation error) climbed to top of leaderboard after one discard in the main event (GGM Standard) with three wins and a third, but they are tough close races.  Alan Keen RSA second with 1, 2, 2, 3. Bob Blakey NZL third on 2, 1, 2, 3. Both have better discards than DPL after his first race OCS."

The reason the club was started.....

Webmaster

As everyone knows the reason the club was started 60 years ago was to provide an "interest" to the "youngsters of this village".

Well this is what we got. .....

Grasshopper 2.0.

Grasshopper 2.0.

....with our youth participating in Sail Brisbane.

The second week of racing, after the youth week, drew to a close finishing up on Sunday.  After four days of racing the 10 races delivered a full set of conditions out on Moreton Bay.  The series started off with fickle breezes, and culminated with a 25knt westerly on day four.  DBSC was represented by Grasshopper 2.0 and Marlena.  G2.0 lead the regatta from the start and wrapped up the regatta with a race to spare.  Marlena finished the regatta 7th overall and 1st female, a fantastic effort.  Both Sail Brisbane and QLD Youth Week were important check-in regattas as the youth sailors focus now turns to Kingston, Canada for the Youth Worlds where DBSC sailors will be tested against the world's best.

Speaking at the press conference, Grasshopper 2.0 said:

"I'm glad it didn't come down to the last race, as Dear Leader's black flag in Kingston was still upsetting me.  I can't wait to sail a standard rig!"

Despite the competition to get to the podium, it is all about comradeship.

Report from Brisvegas

Guest User

While we suffer in the chilly weather, team Alexander, Marlena and Blake have been living large in Brisvegas. They report.......

An update from QLD Youth Week.

The 2015 QLD YOUTH WEEK regatta was held over the past 4 days.  The Youth Radials is the 3rd major event in the calendar along with the Nationals and Youth Nationals.  It was not surprise to see the top ranking WA sailors (1st and 2nd in the country) arrive to contest this premier event.  The regatta, held out of RQYS in Morton Bay,  served up a mixed variety of wind conditions over the 9 race regatta. Day 1, a 5 knott zephyr tested all in the fleet including our DBSC sailors Blake Selley, Marlene Berzins and Finn Alexander.  Finn opened up the tally winning the only race on day 1 by 4 minutes.  Throughout the regatta our sailors each held top 3 positions during the course of racing and achieve scores in the top 5.   With race 9 completed, Finn took out an incredibly convincing regatta win, the only competitor remaining on single points (editors note...one 2nd upset a clean bill of 1sts).  Marlene achieved a credible 5th Female in an very tough fleet.  Unfortunately Blake’s regatta was cut short with a back injury. Final results are attached.  With a day of rest, the sailors reset and compete in the Sail Brisbane regatta, held in the same venue.

Balmoral folk celebrating

Webmaster

Given the strong connection between our club and Balmoral, we have been approached (see below) by the paramount leader at Balmoral Sailing Club, to be part of their 70th celebrations.

Speaking from his lab at MIT, Dear Leader endorsed our members supporting those celebration:

"As a local resident of Balmoral for many years before I downsized to a flat, I always admired the energy around that club and the illegal parking by the Mosman Mums.  I would have joined, except the size of the Laser fleet wasn't world class.

Anyway, I will be attending their birthday celebrations.

I'm off to Kingston shortly for the Worlds, but concerned whether there is enough draft for my tinnie.

DBSC hits its own birthday milestone and I look forward to enjoying a few shandies on our deck."

Get Well Penguin

Guest User

Peter Wallace wrote to let us know of his whereabouts. I don't want to spoil the retelling  when you each see him, but as a teaser, the old hippy's story includes a hernia, an operation, complications, naked gallivanting in RNSH's ICU, induced comas, drugs, weight loss and bed rest.

Penguin, get well and we hope you're back for the first Club Champioship on 5 September.
