Sprint Racing

August Sprints are Back!

Pre-season training began on Saturday with a 12pm briefing and a 1pm first warning signal. We had a solid turnout, just shy of 20 boats on the water. The wind looked like a relatively stable 5+ knot westerly most of the morning. Luckily, we got two solid races in, before the wind completely glassed out halfway through Race 3.

Well done to all competitors, including those who joined us from Woollahra.

After a slow day around the marks, all sailors were grateful for a slow tow home…

Congrats to Steven London, Tim Heath and Stephen Reid who each got a win!
Thank you to Shirley and Geoff B in the canteen, with Katie, Wendell, Conor and Nick running the safety RIBs and the races.

Impressive turnout for a Sunday morning in the middle of winter! All photos by Tim Heath, Rob Blum or Maxim Djura.

Sprint Racing

Three things I want to hear when I go sailing: 10-12 knots of breeze, stable wind, and an empty harbor. What is the phrase to describe all of it? “Champagne Sailing”. Brazilians call it “Captains Wind”. That’s what we got on Sunday. Winter is a magical time when the westerly is not an unpredictable atmospheric phenomenon, but a wind you can savour. Moths and Wazps appeared to agree, too, and shared sailing course with us on that gorgeous Sunday morning.

It was sprints and the last early-Sunday racing of the year (next weekend we’re back to Saturday afternoons). 22 boats started, competed and sailed all together in seven 15-minute races. It was hard to identify individual winners, this being sprint racing and all, so the results below are the class that finished first in each race,, for what it’s worth:

  1. Radial

  2. Standard

  3. Standard

  4. Radial

  5. Standard

  6. Standard

  7. Standard

A bright-eyed on-water team of Dan Constandi, Maxim Djura, Wendell Wait & Rob Blum

Dan Constandi as the COTD is a sailors' and a PRO’s delight. For example:

Dan: “Maxim, most boats stay on port and the wind has shifted. Do you want me to move mark 10 to 15 meters to the right?”

PRO: “Yes, please.”

He and Wendell did a good job at setting and keeping the course square and even start line true. Rob Blum assisted the PRO with driving, time-keeping and advice. And your PRO wasn’t shy of recalling boats and fleets.

Working Bee - Saturday 22nd August

Steven London

The annual working bee will be conducted on Saturday 22nd August from 8am. There is plenty of critical work to be done to ensure the club is in pristine shape for the upcoming season.

All members are expected to attend. If you are unable to attend on the day, please contact the Commodore, Steven London, and arrange for a job to be undertaken at a time convenient to you. (Members who do not participate are under the usual threat of having their Laser torched in the park!)

Race Report Sunday 28 June 2026

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 22 & 23

Sunday morning started cold and overcast, with light breeze shifting around from the south to south-west. There was mist sitting around the harbour and, while it was not exactly warm, it was still a pretty good morning to be out on Sydney Harbour.

The race management team had an eventful start before racing began, with the Jazzman battery flat. This gave the PRO and LtRAR a lesson in Jazzman roadside assistance, which was useful, although hopefully jumpstarting is not something that needs regular practice.

The first course was set racing West towards the Man-of-War Anchorage mooring, off the north of Clark Island and with the start line about two-thirds of the way towards Shark Island. Unfortunately, the breeze shifted hard enough south that the first attempted race had to be abandoned and the course reset. This led to plenty of mark shifting and head scratching from the race management team as we tried to find a course that would hold, with the breeze being knocked around by the passing rain clouds.

Once racing resumed, the fleet was keen to get away and perhaps a little too much. The outgoing tide was not enough to hold the fleet back from the line, with a general recall in each class before the black flag came out. That seemed to settle things down, with the fleet giving the line a lot more respect. Racing then got underway for Races 22 and 23, with some smaller adjustments between races as the breeze continued to shift. Race 24 was not started, with the morning finishing after two races in light and testing conditions.

Final results for the 2026 Winter Series:

Please check the Sailor App for complete results.

Also, a friendly reminder to sign on before racing, as several boats confessed after finishing that they had not, giving the race team a few extra mysteries to solve.

A big thank you to Rodney Barnes as PRO/Instructor, David Murphy as COTD, Alessandro Buzzatti as CoCOTD, and Daryl Lawrence as Handicapper.

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 19, 20 & 21

A blue-bird morning of racing. All photos by David Da Costa Enes.

A 9kt westerly was already in place as the course was set, and didn’t change all morning. This made it easy for the support boat as no marks needed moving. A short start line made preparation paramount. Top mark near Clarke island and an incoming tide needed strategy and brilliant sunshine needed sunglasses.

A contingent of 30 Laser sailors, who launched promptly and paddled, sculled and/or flipflopped their way out of the bay.

Race 1 got off bang on time, but the rolling start for the ILCA7’s failed because the flag attendant was coaching his 4.7 son. No complaints though.

The wind held steady, the races proceeded rapidly and we were ashore at 10.

Winter Championship Results:

ILCA 4:

Race 19: Harper Spacey 1st, Charlie Wait 2nd, Hiro Jacobsen 3rd

ILCA7:

Race 19: Quentin Burns 1st, Kerryn Burns 2nd, Tim Heath 3rd

Race 20: Quentin Burns 1st, Kerryn Burns 2nd, Tim Heath 3rd

Race Report Sunday 14 June 2026

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 16, 17 & 18

Chris Tattersall reports:

I have to admit that it didn’t look promising when dawn broke on Sunday morning. There was not a breath of wind at the club and the wind readings from the harbour were not much more encouraging. And no sun to lift spirits. However, as you do, we put the flags up, dutifully launch the Paul Adam, loaded her up with marks and the rest of the kit and motored out have a look-see.

There was a slight breeze coming from the nor’-nor’-west, so we dropped a leeward mark at the mouth of Double Bay and returned to the club and briefed our contingent of 25 Laser sailors, who launched promptly and paddled, sculled and/or flipflopped their way out of the bay.

When Jazzman arrived at the course area, we had a decision to make. The forecast was for the wind to swing to the west, but later in the day. However, there were snippets of the westerly, and the slot between Clark Island and Darling Point looked promising for a windward leg. Fortunately, as it turned out, one of our guest racers from Rose Bay relayed that there was a bit of wind coming in from the north, so we made the call to drop the weather mark just off the Naval Buoy and run a northerly course.

Race 1 got off after about 15 minutes of AP. For the 4.7’s and Radials Leg 1 was a port tack fetch, and we on the RC felt a bit silly. However, the wind veered back to the north and freshened before the first Laser rounded the top mark, and so the remainder of the race was fine. Except for shortening the course for Race 3, we left the course alone. The northerly held until the last two legs of Race 3, when it backed west and softened again (as did our leeward mark!). All in all, the racing was reasonable, we felt.

Winter Championship Results:

ILCA 4 (all 3 races):
Harper Spacey 1st, Charlie Wait 2nd, Benjamin Philips 3rd

ILCA6:
Race 16: Wakako Kajimoto 1st, Patrick McLachlan 2nd, Scott Finlayson 3rd
Race 17: Zac Howell was 1st, Wakako Kajimoto 2nd, and David Airey & Scott Finlayson 3rd
Race 18: Wakako Kajimoto was 1st, David Airey 2nd, and Zac Howell 3rd

ILCA7:
Race 16: Quentin Burns 1st, Kerryn Burns 2nd, Tim Heath 3rd
Race 17: Quentin Burns 1st, Kerryn Burns 2nd, Tim Heath 3rd
Race 18: Quentin Burns 1st, Kerryn Burns 2nd, Andrew Foote 3rd

Point Score Handicap Winners:
ILCA4: R16: Charley Wait, R17: Charlie Wait & Ben Philips, R18 Harper Spacey
ILCA6: R16: Daryl Lawrence, R17: Scott Finlayson, R18 David Airey
ILCA7: R16: Andrew Foote, R17: Peter D’Arcy-King, R18 Quentin Burns

A very unhappy leeward mark!

A big thank you to our four on-water volunteers: Geoff Kirk (PRO), yours truly (LtRAR) on Jazzman, ably assisted by Brendan Pollard (COTD) and Quinn Sloan (CoCOTD) on Paul Adam 2, plus Scott Finlayson our handicapper.

Full race-by-race outcomes, handicaps, and current standings across all ILCA fleets (ILCA 4, ILCA 6, and ILCA 7) can be found live on the club's scoring portal in the DBSC’s Sailor App under Results.
