Powerboat dates

Guest User

No silly, not a date on a powerboat… This is a reminder to register your interest and available dates for an upcoming powerboat course.

The course will provide participants with an opportunity to improve boat handling skills, learn more about engines and types of crafts and practise navigation techniques on a passage.

The course will cost members $110 (DBSC will subsidise the remaining $110).

60 Seconds With Ben Wirtz

Diana Chen

1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? My dad used to have a small sailing boat, so I guess I was about 2 or 3, but I only learned to sail properly on a 60 footer in the Whitsundays when I was 22.

2. If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? I'd ask Neel Trimarans to custom build me one. I guess I've seen Waterworld one too many times.

3. What is your ultimate sailing goal? Single handed world circumnavigation. I'd have to get divorced first though...

4. Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser? I haven't even given it a name yet, so I guess the story is... German efficiency?

5. If you could add any ingredient to DBSC's world’s best toasties – what would it be? Salty liquorice, the good Scandinavian stuff. I'd get it as a 'naked toastie' though. ;)

6. What are your second/third favourite hobbies (assuming sailing is #1)? Climbing and snowboarding.

7. Describe what you do for work in less than five words? Help companies grow faster.

8. What is the first international destination you will travel to (once we're allowed) and why? Wherever there's snow on the mountains.

9. What is your favourite TV show, movie, and/or book? TV show: Silicon valley. Seeing the space from the inside every day, there's just a lot of truth in this. It's basically infotainment!

10. Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know? I'm the only German who doesn't like (or drink) beer.

Race report 16 May 2021

Guest User

A cold night followed by the coldest morning of the season gave the fleet a a nice chilly westerly on Sunday, the first decent breeze of the winter season which faded in the third race as the day began to warm up.

Race winners in the standard rig championship were Geoff Kirk, Mark Louis and David Newman while in the pointscore, Luke Parker, Mark Lewkovitz and Tim Heath each had a win. In the radial championship, Daniel Costandi scored a hat trick for the day, while in the pointscore, Diana Chen, Simon Stone and Martin White each had a win.

Many thanks to PRO Ian Alexander assisted by Geoff Boscoe on the Jazzman with COTD John Conroy and co-COTD Bonnie Nixon on the water. Tim Heath ensured the carrot and ginger soup cooked up by Paul was hot to warm up the sailors after racing.

Reminder: Mini-bee this weekend

Guest User

We are having a “mini bee” after racing this Sunday to ensure the club is ready for the following weekend (when we will be hosting the AGP, a private function and the ILCA 50th birthday bash).

Please ensure you let your significant others know you will be staying back for a little while after racing so we can do the “white tornado” through the club quickly and painlessly.

ILCA birthday bash!

Guest User

The ILCA Laser 50th birthday bash on Sunday 30 May 2021 is shaping up to be an event to remember with sailors not only coming from around Sydney harbour but interstate!

There’s plenty of fun to be had with a parade sail from Fort Denison to Watsons Bay followed by an off-water BBQ and prize draw at the clubhouse. Prizes include a hull upgrade sponsored by PSA and a chance to win one of three new sails sponsored by NB Sailsports. You must enter online and sail on the day to be eligible to win a prize.

Further details are available in the Notice of Event

Tony McPhail (Coconut Telegraph) will be traveling from Royal Brighton Yacht Club to attend the ILCA birthday bash and is wondering if anyone has a spare room where he could stay. He has been sailing a laser on and off since 1983 and assures us he is easy to get along with. If anyone has a spare room and would like to host Tony, please email the newsletter writer who can connect you.
