60 Seconds With Daniel Costandi…

As the HSC is in full swing we’ve been missing some of our year 12 sailors of late. That includes Daniel Costandi. We look forward to welcoming him back once he’s finished acing his exams. In the meantime here’s a bit about the young man:

1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? 
10 years old

2. If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? 
IMOCA 60

3. What is your sailing goal?
To represent Australia at the Olympic Games in the Laser Mens

4. Tell us the back story to your laser's name?
Race Mode On - Nothing much to it actually… I just switch ON when racing

5. If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties – what would it be?
Vegemite

6. What are your second/ third favourite hobbies (obviously assuming sailing holds the #1 spot)
That’s easy… Fishing and Surfing

7. Describe what you do for work in less than 5 words?
Student doing the HSC

8. What’s the first international flight you are going to book post Covid-19? And why?
Lake Garda, Italy to sail of course!

9. What’s your favourite TV show, movie, and or book?
The Dictator

10. Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know?
I met Beyonce in Las Vegas on a trip with my family when I was 3 years old in the lobby of Caesars Palace where she was about to perform. She picked me up and gave me a kiss with lots of press and media around.

Perfect NEer Forecast for Twilights Tonight

It’s looking like another perfect evening for twilights tonight, with a 5pm splash. Sunny skies and 17 knots from the NE are predicted.  Last Wednesday we had 16 boats participate.  It was an awesome afternoon with a series of mini races run by Brett, and individual coaching tailored to each of the participants in the BBTP and their development stage.  Everyone participated in some very exciting close racing.  Let’s keep the big numbers rolling as we get further into those long warm evenings! 

Choppy Spring Point Score Kicks Off

It was a challenging day for the nearly 40 boats who took to the water for the kick-off heats of the Spring Point Score (which are scored as heats 3 and 4 due to the COVID-delayed season). The wind was a steady 20 knot N/NEer, which at times gusted to well over 25 knots. The fresh breeze was blowing against a strong outgoing current making for a Harbour that resembled a washing machine. 

Congratulations to the robust victors. The results (after handicapping) were: Full Rigs: Michael Osborne (Point Score Heat 3) and Hadrien Bourely (Point Score Heat 4); Radials/4.7s: Evie Saunders (Point Score Heat 3) and Daryl Lawrence (Point Score Heat 4). 

Thanks to the race volunteers who helped in the wild winds — Ashley Deacon (PRO), Richard Au (LTRaR), Andrew Simpson (COTD), Christine Patton (CCO/CO-COTD) and Jules Hall and Hadrien Bourely who helped Paul and Shirley with canteen orders.

DBSC’s National Champ – Clare Alexander

Clare has done it again – this time on the national level, winning Australian Sailing’s National SheSails Award in part for her work in creating and running The Women’s Regatta hosted by DBSC. In accepting the award Clare explained, “If this event sparks an idea, another dedicated regatta or just one female giving it a go, then we have achieved what we set out to do.” You can check out Clare’s acceptance speech HERE. 

Congratulations Clare! We are so proud of all of your efforts both on The Women’s Regatta and your ongoing help and support around the club. 

State Championship at Belmont 16s on 5-6 December

The Laser State Tiles will be held at Belmont 16’s Sailing Club on 5th and 6th December on beautiful Lake Macquarie.

This is a great opportunity to test your sailing skills against an open fleet.

1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?
I think I was 8 or 10, sailing an old style wooden Moth, and Manly Junior at balmoral.

2. If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? 
Beneteau First 53

3. What is your sailing goal? 
Keeping fit, having fun (Be more competitive in the laser fleet 😀) 

4. Tell us the back story to your laser's name? 
London Pride - a bit of a joke - well there are many things named after me 😀, this beer is but one - I hope one day to have pride in my sailing abilities (not there yet!)

 5. If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties – what would it be?(Love them as they are) - Sliced black olives 

6. What are your second/ third favourite hobbies (obviously assuming sailing holds the #1 spot)

COVID Rules Relaxation

In light of current COVID regulations and after a review of last week’s season opener, we are revising some of our COVIDSafe policies. Based on available space we will now permit 10 members on the front deck, 20 in clubhouse, and no limits in park. But please remember that the 1.5m physical distancing rule still applies. 

The changerooms and men’s toilet remain closed. You must continue to change outside or come and go in your wetsuit. However, women are now permitted to use the toilets in the women’s changeroom, with the men continuing to use the accessible toilet.   

Cashless canteen orders will continue to be placed under the marquee in the park. We know that everyone has been craving a world famous toastie so please order one this week and support our canteen!
