Twilights on Tonight

Tonight will be the first instalment of this season’s Brett Beyer Twilight Program, with on water coaching for those who have signed up (participants please make sure you have paid up HERE). Everyone is welcome, including visitors from other clubs. 

Last week’s twilights were magical.

Season Opener Club Champs

It was great to finally get the season underway last Saturday. A month late in starting due to COVID restrictions, the first heats of the Club Championships were held under beautiful conditions with warm temps, sunny skies and a decent NE breeze. Forty boats competed in the kick-off event. 

In the Radials, Martin White was victorious both races. In the Standards, Rod Barnes won the first race, and Ian Alexander triumphed in the second race. Congrats to all the competitors.  

Thanks also to last week’s race management volunteers: PRO Craig Sheers, assisted by Geoff Boscoe, COTD Jason Wilkins, CCO Derek Hand, and Canteen Assistants Rod Barnes and Gerry Donohoe.

LTR is Back This Saturday

Been craving the lessons and tips from our very own Champion, Martin White and his crack team of coaches? Your wait is over. Learn to Race is back on this Saturday, 17 October at 9am. It will then continue on the first and third Saturday of the month (except Jan 2). Come along if you want to learn more about Laser boat handling, balance, boat posture, trim, starts, tacks, gybes, boat set-up and any other race management fundamentals. Sign Up for State Masters Champs in Jervis Bay

We previously ran an Expression of Interest for those wishing to attend the State Masters Championship which is scheduled to be heled at Jervis Bay Sailing Club on 13 – 14 February 2021.

We’re hoping to have a large DBSC contingent travel to this beautiful setting – along with family and friends. It should be a wonderful weekend away.

Big Boat Racing

Last Sunday we had a Big Boat race (postponed one week due to the October long weekend). It was a cracker of a day on the harbour with a 15-18 knot NE breeze, and sunny skies. Though only two boats participated, the day was enjoyable and competitive. Despite a close call with a Harbour Marker, Chenonceau was able to outpace Smitten to win the day. The Big Boats race again on Sunday, November 1 at 2pm. 

Removal of Fuel Canisters

We have noticed a number of non-DBSC fuel canisters stored in various parts of the club, most notably in the vestibule to the women’s bathroom. 

Storage of fuel at the club represents a fire hazard that we cannot permit. All DBSC fuel is stored in a fireproof locker, but there is no room in that locker for private fuel canisters. 

If the fuel canisters shown in the photos below belong to you, can you please remove them by this coming Saturday, 17 October. Any non-DBSC fuel canisters remaining on that date will be removed and disposed. 

If you wish to claim one of the below canisters and cannot get to the club before Saturday, please let the Commodore know by email HERE.

Bin Your Waste Properly

We know it’s not glamorous, but we need everyone’s help to ensure the right stuff is going into the right bins. It may seem simple but sadly it’s not happening. 

We have three different types of bins:

The BLUE bins are special “return and earn” recycling bins through which we earn money. The only items that can go in these bins are empty plastic bottles which have a readable barcode (i.e. water, sports drink, etc.) or beer bottles with readable barcodes on labels. Do not crush the bottles and cans as that makes the barcodes unreadable. These items cannot be co-mingled with other types of garbage. NO wine or spirit bottles are permitted. The blue bins should always be inside, except on the rare occasions they are full and are put out for collection.  

The YELLOW bins take recyclables not included in Blue bins, including wine and spirit bottles, paper, and cardboard. Please make sure to flatten any boxes.

The RED bins are for non-recyclable general waste. 

The yellow and red bins are kept in the club, except on sailing days when they are outside of the rollerdoor at its eastern side. At the end of the day they should be brought back inside. 

We appreciate everyone’s contribution to our waste management and recycling efforts by focusing on these two simple requests – put uncrushed bottles and cans into the BLUE bins and always bring the bins inside if you notice them outside at the end of the day.

House Management Volunteer Needed

We’re looking for a House Management volunteer. The role is to keep the clubhouse organized and tidy — find a place to put everything and know where that is, tidy up as needed from time to time, print out paperwork for use each week (CSO sheets, sign on sheets, race record sheets), coordinate labelling instructions on various items as needed, provide input on what is needed at working bees, and coordinate occasional newsletter articles where specific matters need communication. It’s a great way to up your volunteer hours to help secure a lower rack placement. If you’re interested let Andrew Cox know HERE.   

DBSC Racing at The UK Masters Nationals

As many know, Matt Knight and his family have relocated to England. Despite moving countries Matt sailed under the DBSC flag for the UK Masters Nationals last weekend.  Matt finished 10th (out of 23). Not a bad result after not sailing for 8 months. But it’s clear that Matt still needs to acquire the knack of sailing in colder waters… or just throw in the towel and return to DBSC in sunny Sydney ;)

Laser Radial/Full Rig Sail Number 202818

Her name is "Jenny" (of Forest Gump fame) and really is the most beautiful boat on the water (Forrests words, and mine).

It is in great condition, built 2011, fast, bone dry on the inside, with a stiff hull and competitive.
I have been racing her as a full rig and I have all the spars and sails to set it up as a full rig or a radial rig.

The boat is fully kitted out with turbo vang, carbon mast top section, carbon tiller, centerboard and rudder bag.

1 x Radial Sail (good condition)
1 x Standard Sail (good condition)

I am sadly selling her as I don't get enough time to sail with my young family.
