Lend a Hand to Lynda and Mike

Kirk Marcolina

DBSC member Mike Dunne’s partner Lynda has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. As much as this is a shock to everyone, Lynda is dealing with this with her trademark wit, humour and grace, making everyone feels as good a possible about an extremely tough situation.

As with any medical treatments, there are out of pocket costs as well as reduced ability to earn income. Friends of Lynda and Mike have set up a GoFundMe page to give the couple a bit of financial buffer, to help relieve the stress in this early stage of treatment and allow them to 100% focus on getting better.

If you’d like to contribute, please visit the GoFundMe page HERE.

Brett Beyer Pathway Program

Kirk Marcolina

Just starting to race at DBSC? Feel a bit intimidated by racing in a big fleet in Sydney Harbour? Want some tips and tricks to bridge the gap between Learn to Race and Saturday Championships? Then the Brett Beyer Pathway Program (BBPP) is for you. Brett will be running this specially designed program to help transition sailors from Learn To Race onto the start line, and to assist more regular sailors to be better positioned to benefit from the Brett Beyer Saturday Program.

There will be two programs, each will have six sailors only, and will run for four Sunday morning sessions at a cost of $267 per person.  The dates for the first program will be 11 Aug, 18 Aug, 22 Sep, 27 Oct.  The dates for the second program will be 3 Nov, 17 Nov, 1 Dec, 22 Dec.

Could you please email Andrew Cox HERE if you are interested in the BBPP?

Youth World Tour Continues

Kirk Marcolina

Another week and another regatta where our fearless DBSC sailors have left the shores of Australia to compete internationally. This time the venue was Kingston, Canada which hosted the 2019 ILCA Laser Radial Youth World Championships.

There were 12 races with lots of tricky conditions on Lake Ontario, which meant the leader board was changing daily! As usual our youth performed very well.

Boys Fleet – 160 Sailors

Otto Henry – 18th  - Gold Fleet

Daniel Costandi - 13th – Silver Fleet

Girls Fleet – 48 Sailors

Brooke Wilson – 8th Overall – 3rd Under 17

Mina Ferguson – 10th Overall – 4th Under 17

Big Boat Race Report

Written by Chris Bowling

The forecast of a 10 knot southerly looked all wrong at start time, with the last gasp of a westerly rapidly fading.  We decided on a short course.  But at exactly 1:00 the southerly came in, so we reverted to the full course.

The new breeze gave Chenonceau the best of the start with Sanity next, and Corinna left in their lee. Sanity soon took the lead and gradually moved away throughout to win by about 10-15 minutes. Smitten had gone for a cruise to look at a moored submarine and so missed the start, but had an enjoyable cruise following the others around the course.

On the very light and shifty run to Taylors Bay Corinna overtook Chenonceau to set up a good tussle.  Chenonceau regained second place approaching Sow and Pigs, with Corinna just failing to gain buoy room.  But Chenonceau left a hole for Corinna to slip through at the turn.  Unfortunately, Chenonceau broke a boom fitting, ending what might have been a really interesting finish.

At the finish:

  •  Sanity

  •  Corinna

  •  Smitten

  •  Chenonceau - DNF

A pleasant cruise round the bay ended with a gentle chat at the club.

With Chenonceau away next month we really need G Force and Time and Tide to make a fleet.  Please try to be there on 1st September – we don’t want this fleet to die.
