Masters Weekend Away to Break Record

Kirk Marcolina

It’s great to see that 20 members have already signed up to join our contingent headed North for the State Masters at Lake Macquarie over the weekend of 2-3 March. It’s set to be a record number of traveling DBSC sailors and is sure to be a great weekend away. If you haven’t done so already, please let us know here if you can join in the fun as we need to lock down numbers and start planning transport and accommodation.

DBSC Represents at Nationals

Kirk Marcolina

Fifteen of our amazing sailors headed south to Devonport, Tasmania for the Australian and Oceania Laser National Championships from 1st to 8th January 2019. The weather was strong early — up to 30+ knots and 3m waves. It’s been a tough field as expected at the open nationals, including extensive representation from the Australian Sailing Team. The final results have DBSC’s top performers as:

  • 4.7s — Brooke Wilson, a stellar result with 3rd overall, and 1st female youth, followed by Daniel Costandi in 5th overall and 2nd male youth - bringing home 2nd and 1st in the final race between them;

  • Radials — Otto Henry in 5th and 2nd male youth, Sylvie Stannage 26th overall and 2nd Youth Female, our first master, Pat Levy, in 45th overall and 4th Grand Master;

  • Standards — Finn Alexander in 5th, with our first master, Brett Beyer, in 7th overall and 1st Master.

You can check out the results here.

Tyrell and Rousso Results

Kirk Marcolina

DBSC members celebrated the festive season on the harbour in style, donning Santa hats as they sailed the annual Tyrell and Rousso races last Saturday. The forecast 30-knots didn’t eventuate, but there was still more than a bit of excitement in these unique annual races. In the Tyrell, the handicapped chase saw Jim Dounis winning in a very close finish.

The breeze picked up for the Rousso (a scratch race with a massed start). With thunderstorms looming, the race committee wisely shortened the course at the second bottom mark rounding. The shortened finish saw Andrew Cox first in the radials and Luke Parker first in the standards, with Luke taking the trophy after application of the yardstick. Thanks to the on-water crew: Mark Bethwaite (who set up the course despite being unwell before retiring for the afternoon), Daryl Lawrence, Clare Alexander, Tony Scott, Julian Van Aalst, Emily Ball, and Dene Bergman. Thanks also to the canteen crew who were assisted this week by Richard Au.

DBSC Celebrates Christmas in Style

Kirk Marcolina

Massive thunderstorms rolled into Sydney Saturday night, but that didn’t stop the 80+ DBSC members, family and friends from celebrating at our annual Christmas party. The group was treated to an amazing spread of food thanks to Paul Adam, The Lady Bergman, Shirley Roach, Christine Van Aalst, Emily Ball’s mum, and a surprise dessert from Clare Alexander.

Once dinner was done, and a few snapshots in the photo booth taken, tables were cleared and the dance floor came alive. DJ Steamhole (aka James Tudball) turned up the tunes and our special guest Freddy Mercury (aka Pat Levy) belted out some notable melodies. The dancing and fun went until late.

As always, DBSC put on a fabulous show of food, fun, friendship and lots of frivolity! Eat your heart out Bedouin [the latest night club in Double Bay].

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped bring our community together and make the night such a success. Please be sure to check out the photos and videos of the night on the Top Mark Facebook Page.

Keen to Burn Off a Few Christmas Calories?

Kirk Marcolina

There is no racing scheduled for 29 December, but some of us will sail.  Usual time (1.15 pm briefing, 1.30 splash), usual place, probably an unusual format. There possibly won’t be a rescue boat, but we’ll try to set some sort of course.

No canteen lunch service, so BYO leftovers.
