The best ILCA / Laser sailing club in the world, located in Double Bay on Sydney Harbour.
It’s going to be a great night -- 75 people have RSVPed. The festivities start at 7pm, so after sailing plan on going home and getting spruced up for the big night. To make the event a success we need volunteers before, during and after the party. (Think setting up tables and chairs, bar, ice, drinks, glasses, lights, sweeping, BBQ, etc.) Please email commodore@dbsc.com.au if you’re willing to lend a hand.
This Saturday we have our famous once-a-year Tyrell and Rousso races, which are super fun formats. The Tyrell is a handicapped chase, with the slowest boat starting first and successive faster boats hunting each other down as they start over the next 5-10 minutes per their handicaps. The format makes for what is perhaps the most competitive and exciting race of the season! The Rousso is a scratch race with a massed start, in which all boats in all classes start together – a yardstick is applied to the winner in each of the classes to determine the overall winner. By tradition, everyone wears a Santa hat – we will hand them out on the day and hopefully have a few spare on the Jazzman for those sailing from other clubs! Handicaps and detailed instructions will be available at the briefing (and on the Jazzman for those sailing from other clubs).

Competency Training
A new initiative from the club is to host regular PRO/COTD competency and safety courses.
This is an important initiative to ensure we maintain and improve the high standards of racing and safety that our aspirations require. We would appreciate participation from all members – and no matter how competent you think you are, you will learn something important, so please come along.
The only training for this season will be 9am on February 2nd and the topics that will be covered are:

Jazzman launch
Radio operation
Emergency response
Incident management plan
Defibrillator Use 101
CPR 101
Off-water COTD responsibilities
The course will be taught by fellow members provide valuable insights to all members regardless of your experience level. Please sign up here.
Boat Licence Course
We have 4 people signed up and have 4 more slots for the 1-day boat licence course at DBSC on 20 January, 2019. All members should have this licence if you perform PRO or COTD duties. The course costs members $125 and the club subsidises the other 50%.

State Masters Championship
DBSC members will be traveling north for the State Masters at Lake Macquarie over the weekend of 2-3 March. Please let us know if you’re able to join us for this fun weekend away. So far we have 15 who have signed up… there must be more. We need to know numbers ASAP so we can organise accommodation and transport, so please register your interest here.
2019 Brett Beyer Programs
Next week, we will be asking who wants to participate in the next instalment of the BBSP and BBTP – so get ready to get better!
A 25kt NE gradient breeze, together with Sail Sydney, saw a reduced fleet of 28 boats compete in the final heats of the Spring Point Score. The order of the day was to remain upright, and this was achieved by very few! The second order of the day was stencilled in our brains, thanks to last week’s phrase of the day from Brett Beyer, “more Cunningham”. Thanks to Ashley Deacon and Christine Patton for perfect course setting and race management, and to Yves Stening and Chris Stannage on the water, assisted by Justin Davey and Diana Chen who generously offered to assist in the breezy conditions.
The competition in the radial / 4.7 fleet was tight heading into the final week of the Spring Point Score. Peter Collie, who was leading, was unable to attend, and ceded the trophy to Pat Levy with 70.0 points (who is on a roll after his winter series win), ahead of Andrew Cox on 73.5 points. In the standards, Ashley Deacon was the clear leader on 44.5 points, well ahead of Hadrien Bourely on 53.0 points. Well done Pat and Ashley.

From 4-9 December Woollahra Sailing Club played host to Sail Sydney -- a premier, multiple fleet dinghy regatta in Sydney Harbour which is coordinated annually, attracting interstate and international competition. Many of DBSC’s youth sailors took part (along with the very youthful Pat Levy, who was the only master to compete in the radial fleet). Our sailors had some great results. In the 4.7s DBSC was on top of 22 boats: Zac West was the winner (sailing in the 4.7 and radial fleets back to back), Mark Louis 2nd, Brooke Wilson 3rd, Daniel Costandi 4th and Evie Saunders 5th. In the Radial fleet of 27 boats Otto Henry was first, Campbell Patton was 6th, and Maddie O’Shea was 7th. And in the Standards Finn Alexander took 7th place. Well done to all!

As you have probably already heard, we’re trying to have a large contingent of DBSC members to travel north for the State Masters at Lake Macquarie over the weekend of 2-3 March. We have investigated accommodation for a lager “club camp out” and have concluded that there is nothing suitable available that weekend.
However, we still want lots members to participate at the Masters and we need to know numbers ASAP to coordinate accommodation and transport. Please RSVP here now and let us know if you can join us.
We are still interested in investigating the idea of a separate “away weekend” for the club, at a venue with good accommodation and interesting sailing. The management committee is going to investigate alternatives and logistics, and, if workable, will then publish a survey to determine interest. If we can make it work and there is interest, we will include it in the sailing calendar for next year.
A season (and close to all-time) record 57-boats raced last Saturday in Club Championship heats 7 and 8. There was a building NE breeze that started around 12-knots and peaked at 22-knots. The day was full of surprises with increasing winds, drifting marks, very delayed starts and fast reaches (with Nick Pellow reaching over 12 knots!)
The winners were as follows: in the Standards, David Newman (1st in both heats), in the Radials, Campbell Patton and Zac West, and in the 4.7s, Finn Kirk and Sara Brooks. Thanks to our PRO, Jonathan Stone, who was assisted by Clare Alexander, David Devlin, Wade McDonough, Dene Bergman and Luke Parker.
A challenging day of racing was capped by a scrumptious barbie on the club deck. Thanks to Paul, Andrea and Shirley for a great spread. And of course, well done to Peter Collie, Pat Levy and the other BBQ masters.
The Foiling Week is the first and only global event dedicated to the amazingly fast foiling boats, their sailors, designers and builders. Foiling Week's next event is happening at Woollahra Sailing Club on December 13-16. DBSC members are invited to reserve a place to try Foiling during this event.
