Marine Rescue NSW Honours Dene Bergman

Kirk Marcolina

Marine Rescue NSW has honoured our very own Dene Bergman for 10-years of service as a weekly volunteer radio operator. In that role Dene monitors the airwaves for boaters in need of rescue or less urgent assistance. He’s also been a source of local knowledge and advice on local waterways and conditions, broadcast regular weather updates and is ready to help boaters check their marine radios are in good operating order. Importantly, in the position he also monitors the radio safety net which includes the State’s only Log On and Log Off service for recreational boaters. Big congratulations and thank you to Dene for 10 years of dedicated service.

Nautilus Marine Features DBSC Women’s Laser Regatta

Kirk Marcolina

Check out the latest edition of Nautilus Marine’s magazine for a great article on DBSC’s Women’s Laser Regatta. One of the highlights is the brilliant photography of Hadrian Bourley. Congratulations again to everyone who helped pull off such a great event which has brought the club some well-deserved publicity.

Missing Sail

Kirk Marcolina

Michael Osborne is missing a standard Mk II sail with the number 212826. Battens were in it.

The last day he sailed before last week was 27 Oct, so it could have gone missing anytime over a 5-week period. If you have seen the sail, please let Michael know by emailing him here

Mirrors Need Your Help

Kirk Marcolina

The Mirror Dinghy National & World Championships are coming to Sydney!  … and we need your help. Woollahra Sailing Club (WSC) is hosting both regattas from 31 December 2018 to 6 January 2019, and to make them a success we are looking for volunteers to:

  • Drive rescue boats

  • Drive mark boats

  • Assist with on-shore duties

Volunteers are needed to do as little as one afternoon or the whole regatta.  If you’d like to help, please email the Volunteer Co-Ordinator, Celia May at: celiamay@bigpond.net.au.

Wild Winds

Kirk Marcolina

Gusts of 45-knots on Sunday forced the cancellation of DBSC’s big boat race and most other sailing on the Harbour. But for one of DBSC’s Youth Sailors, Daniel Costandi, it was the perfect breeze for a bit of a training session. Check out this video:

Successful Sailing Stories

Kirk Marcolina

50 people attended our inaugural Sailing Stories talk last Thursday at RPEYC. After a beautiful dinner and socialising the group sat down to listen to the tails of Rob Greenhalgh, a professional round-the-world Volvo Ocean Racer. Rob’s informative explanation of the evolution of the series and gripping videos and behind-the-scenes account of the races, made for a compelling and entertaining evening. Thanks to Rob for generously donating his time and to RPEYC for hosting the event. Stay tuned for the next instalment of the series in early 2019.

Slow Sprints

Kirk Marcolina

After a Spring season filled with massive winds, Mother Nature must have taken pity on the fleet knowing we had a Sprint day planned. The nearly 30 boats that presented struggled to find consistent wind. The predicted Southerly never fully eventuated, instead the sailors were faced with a 6 to 9 knot Easterly with lots of holes.  After 4 short races the fleet called it a day. Thanks to PRO: Josh Kirton, COTD: Pippa Batchelor with help from Pippa’s father and Mick.
