Winter Sprints off to a Hot Start

Kirk Marcolina

August means Winter Sprint Racing at DBSC. Last Saturday 25 sailors presented for the first in the month-long series, including three visitors from VYC. There were quite a few “tired and emotional” individuals post the Season Opening Dinner!  (Latest known bed time of those present and sailing was 9am.  Not Pat this time…)

The winds proved to be a bit of a challenge, with a westerly with a lot of left in it and a difficult top mark under Clark Island. Add to that, there were 5 knot holes in the middle of the course and 20+ knot bullets from the left and right. Despite the difficult conditions, David Huber set an excellent course solo and gave us 6 x 20min races for a massive 2hrs racing time. Hats off to him and to Paul and Andrea for staffing the canteen – toasties before and soup afterwards – a perfect accompaniment to the afternoon. More Sprints are on again this Saturday afternoon – we hope to see you then.

One Month Countdown to Our Inaugural Women’s Laser Regatta

Guest User

The scene is set at Double Bay for a wonderful weekend on 8-9 September.  The coaches are ready with Krystal Weir leading the gang. Yoga on the deck overlooking Sydney Harbour will be a great way to start each morning. We have a lovely evening of celebration and inspirational women organised.  Don’t miss out!  Jump in a laser and join us. Our limit is 50 women so act fast, bring a friend and sign up to this one of a kind weekend event.  Thanks to NSW Laser Association and the Woollahra Council for providing so much backing for our event.  Come and improve your sailing and meet some like-minded women! Enter here

To make sure this weekend is spectacular we need DBSC members’ help. One specific need is a bed for one of our coaches, close to the Club, from Friday September 7 to Sunday afternoon September 9.  She will arrive from Brisbane Friday evening and will leave on a flight on Sunday evening.  Her name is Ashley Stoddart.  We are also looking for transport to and from the airport to be provided by members if possible. If you can help us with this request, please email Christine Patton here.

Big Boat Report

Guest User

A sparkling afternoon, cloudless. The wind built from maybe 3 knots at the start to nearly 10 knots at the finish and 15 before we unrigged and got ashore.

A well-run start from Peter Collie and crew on a Club RIB - thank you. T&T tried to start on port at the pin end and was 20 seconds too slow to clear the other three boats, who all started more conventionally, on starboard. They judged well - although the pin end was favoured, it was possible to cross on starboard and to clear Clarke Island without tacking. So SanityCorinna and Chenonceu all headed left into the harbour while T&T had to duck all their transoms, head right across Double Bay and find the right moment to tack out.

Long story short, Sanity was just too fast; her skipper has her going well in light winds and fresh. Speed took her to the front of the group, and she won the race untroubled, without bothering with a spinnaker on the run. Conversely, Chenonceau was slow in the light winds; she made ground late in the race as the wind built up, but too much had been lost.

That left Corinna and T&T in the middle of the small fleet, and the advantage changed and changed between us. Corinna was first to the Point Piper mark; T&T closed a little to Taylor’s Bay; then, uncharacteristically for an upwind leg, T&T sailed faster on the leg to Sow’n Pigs rounding well in front - though of course in second behind Sanity. The boat seemed to settle into her task, David’s crew work was fast and neat and, when we sailed right to the Neilsen Park area we picked up a valuable easterly that allowed us to reach the mark with a single tack.

Our small victory then faded as Corinna hoisted a spinnaker and cruised past us at a rate of knots, turning a deficit of several hundred metres into a lead of several hundred metres at the end. Our problem - we didn’t have the spinnaker skills on board, though we did pole the jib. Next time…

Across the line:

  • Sanity
  • Corinna
  • Time & Tide
  • Chenonceau

By the time we got ashore the breeze was 15-20 knots and very cool, so we sat inside the Clubhouse, skippers and crews - which included all of Chris’ family, including Krisha and Russell.

Talk ranged from the Laser dinner on the Friday night preceding, to the 150 anniversary ‘do’ at the SYS the same evening, to our own race.

Eventually other matters called us all from different directions; and Club Laser sailors - having enjoyed the fresh late breeze - were still unrigging on the grass.

We sail next on September 2 - the beginning of the long ‘real’ season; 9 races taking us to May 2019.

Season Opening Dinner This Friday

Kirk Marcolina

We have a great turnout of 34 people attending the Season Opening Sailors’ and Volunteers’ Dinner this Friday, 3 August at the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club. Arrive at 7pm for drinks and 7.30pm dinner. Come on time so you get to drink your share of the bar tab.

Don’t forget to come dressed in black and white – you can wear anything as long as it is black and white! There will be a prize for best costume – as decided by Clare Alexander and Peter Collie.

To make things easy on the night, here are the seating arrangements – every table setting will have a number.  When you arrive, draw one black card, one white card and one red card.  The black card has your place number for entrées, the white card has your place number for mains and the red card has your team number for a game we are going to play between entrées and mains.  When we sit down for dinner, just find the place number on the table that matches your black card number, and that’s where you sit for entrées.  We’ll explain the rest as the evening progresses. We’re looking forward to a great night!

Winter Championship Results

Kirk Marcolina

It was a warm winter’s morning for the final three heats of the inaugural DBSC Winter Championship, with the air temperature at a balmy 16 degrees and an unusual due north breeze that necessitated a slightly shorter course than normal.  Gerry, Pat and Pia did a great job setting the course in the shifty conditions.

We had a reduced fleet of 14 boats this week, including two visitors from VYC.  The Standard fleet was back to strength, with Dave Newman in a commanding lead, but the series second slot was up for grabs between Geoff Kirk, Ian Alexander and Michael Osborne.  The Radial results were also up for grabs, with Andrew Cox needing 3, 2, 2 or better to take the series from Pat Levy, and Martin White contending hard for second.

After some tricky conditions that saw the wind shifting left and then right (with some pretty big holes in the middle due to Bradleys Head), and also increasing from <10 knots to >25kts, the series was decided.

Congratulations to the winners:  in the Standards, Dave Newman finished first with 39.3 points, ahead of Geoff Kirk with 45.4 points and Ian Alexander with 54.6 points, and in the Radials, Pat Levy was victorious with 38.6 points, ahead of Andrew Cox with 39.9 points and Martin White with 40.3 points. Very close!!

A big thank you to Christine Patton, who worked most weeks on the Jazzman, to Clare Alexander, who also helped some weeks, to Mark Crowhurst, who took care of all the rostering, to Brett Beyer, who ran a very successful winter coaching program, to Paul Adam for the amazing soup he provided, and to Peter Collie, Tim Patton and Christine Patton for getting the soup ready and served each week.

Thanks to the 43 boats that participated in the series, thanks to all our volunteer on-water crews, and finally thanks to our visitors for joining us for the series – Andrew Belford from Dobroyd Aquatic Club, and Peter Heywood, Anthony Scali and Phil Eadie from Vaucluse Yacht Club – we enjoyed your company and the competition you provided.
