Winter Championship Results

Kirk Marcolina

It was a warm winter’s morning for the final three heats of the inaugural DBSC Winter Championship, with the air temperature at a balmy 16 degrees and an unusual due north breeze that necessitated a slightly shorter course than normal.  Gerry, Pat and Pia did a great job setting the course in the shifty conditions.

We had a reduced fleet of 14 boats this week, including two visitors from VYC.  The Standard fleet was back to strength, with Dave Newman in a commanding lead, but the series second slot was up for grabs between Geoff Kirk, Ian Alexander and Michael Osborne.  The Radial results were also up for grabs, with Andrew Cox needing 3, 2, 2 or better to take the series from Pat Levy, and Martin White contending hard for second.

After some tricky conditions that saw the wind shifting left and then right (with some pretty big holes in the middle due to Bradleys Head), and also increasing from <10 knots to >25kts, the series was decided.

Congratulations to the winners:  in the Standards, Dave Newman finished first with 39.3 points, ahead of Geoff Kirk with 45.4 points and Ian Alexander with 54.6 points, and in the Radials, Pat Levy was victorious with 38.6 points, ahead of Andrew Cox with 39.9 points and Martin White with 40.3 points. Very close!!

A big thank you to Christine Patton, who worked most weeks on the Jazzman, to Clare Alexander, who also helped some weeks, to Mark Crowhurst, who took care of all the rostering, to Brett Beyer, who ran a very successful winter coaching program, to Paul Adam for the amazing soup he provided, and to Peter Collie, Tim Patton and Christine Patton for getting the soup ready and served each week.

Thanks to the 43 boats that participated in the series, thanks to all our volunteer on-water crews, and finally thanks to our visitors for joining us for the series – Andrew Belford from Dobroyd Aquatic Club, and Peter Heywood, Anthony Scali and Phil Eadie from Vaucluse Yacht Club – we enjoyed your company and the competition you provided.

Inaugural Womens' Laser Regatta - loaner items

Webmaster

Following on from our shout out last week about needing help for our event we now ask for some specific items that we will need to make the regatta a success.  If you are able to lend or donate any of the following items to be used over the course of our 8 and 9 September 2018 regatta we ask that you let Christine Patton know at christine@bermudamarine.bm.   Christine will keep a register of lent items and will match the equipment, boat, sail with a woman sailor so that you have control of your equipment.

As part of the charter process there are items that will not be made available to the girls and women by the charter boat companies such as vangs, main sheet blocks and sails .  They are happy to assist with lines and tiller extensions but these more expensive items will not be provided.

We ask that you consider lending these items to the regatta and if broken over that weekend then the Club will replace them with a new part.

Our wish list is:

Sailing items

  • Loaner boats
  • Loaner Radial and 4. 7 sails
  • Loaner Equipment items to include: Full vang system, mainsheet block, main sheet,
  • Ribs for rescue and race committee as needed – not sure how many needed yet

Social items

  • Loaner Outdoor Deck heaters that we can put on the deck for yoga and drinks and prize giving
  • Loaner PA System for our Inspirational Speaker evening- September 8
