New PRO / COTD Roster

We have updated the PRO/COTD roster to reflect changes in membership and to ensure that no participants in the Brett Beyer Saturday Coaching Program are rostered to be in a RIB on any of the days that program is running. The updated calendar is live here.

If you are scheduled in the coming weeks and have already had communication with Mark/Michael about your duty, then any changes should have been communicated to you directly. We encourage you to check to be sure. If you were scheduled at a future date, your date may have changed. Please check the calendar and use the form here to advise us if you cannot volunteer on  your scheduled day. The more notice you give us of your availability/unavailability the easier it is to re-schedule accordingly.

Saturday Sailing

The first Point Score heats of the season made for some interesting sailing, with a typically gusty shifty 18-25kt southerly breeze in Double Bay, complicated by a persistent shift to the left and decreasing pressure throughout the afternoon.  Get on the wrong side of the course at your peril, as many found out the hard way.
 
We had over 30 boats on the water, including welcome guest appearances from some of the top talent from both MHASC and VYC, which served to intensify the already-stiff competition. 
 
The winners on adjusted time were Fernando Gonzales and Gerry Donohoe in the Standards, and Robert Young and Alistair Sutherland in the Radials.  Brooke Wilson turned in an excellent performance in the 4.7s.
 
Resident sailors were very appreciative of the new concrete works that made getting in and out of the club a dream.  Thanks to Mike Gentry and another mystery volunteer for filling in around the edges of the concrete!

Season Opening Sailors’ Dinner

Our Season Opening Sailors’ Dinner is a go!  Block out your calendars for 27 October, dry clean your cocktail gear, and polish up on your salsa.  Most importantly, please RSVP via TryBooking by following this link. 
 
It is priced at $90 per person, which includes a two-course dinner and a group-shared beer, champagne and wine tab of $30 per head (after which it will be pay as you go, so get there early).  Dress is smart casual.
 
We will be celebrating the start of our season as well as the return of our Worlds Masters sailors (more on the Worlds next week). We have planned an evening of fine dining and drinking up-to-but-not-including excess, with the prospect of a little billiards and a bit of a twist to keep things interesting.
 
All DBSC sailors, volunteers and other members are welcome. We hope to see you there.  (A family day will be held later in the season for those close to us to attend). 

Survey Instalment 3

This week’s survey instalment covers the topics of training, rack positions and rigging.  Next week, we will cover youth, social and volunteering.
 
(a)    Training
·         More training opportunities – Brett Beyer programs and twilight seminars
·         More coaching from “elite” sailors – “buddy” system to be implemented (details to come)
·         Peer mentoring for LTR transition – “buddy” system again
·         Morning mini-races for less experienced – club is open to this if someone volunteers
 
(b)   Rack positions
·         Rack allocation understanding – objective model already in operation (details to come)
·         Better rack positions – if you don’t think it’s fair, ask and we will explain
·         Boat hoist system – this is being investigated (difficult and no guarantees)
·         Temporary rack swaps (holidays / winter) – informal program exists (we will publicize)
 
(c)    Rigging
·         Lawn resurfacing – concrete works done, lawn now deferred until after sailing season
·         Second boat ramp repair – negotiations ongoing with RMS and WMC
·         Improved speed of rigging / de-rigging – new hoses and “buddy” system
·         Spare parts shop – this is being implemented (details to come)
·         Boat repair clinic – this will occur (details to come)
·         Boat protection on club dollies – this has been done
·         Improved security for personal dollies – recommendation is not to store personal dollies
·         Parking at DBSC Primary School – this is too hard (liability / indemnity / access issues)

Brett Beyer Saturday Sailing Program

The Brett Beyer Saturday Sailing Program is confirmed.  We are very excited to launch this new initiative, starting 14 October.  Get ready to see some laser speed records broken.

We will email details this week for payment via TryBooking to those people who have signed up.  Fees need to be paid by Friday 22 September to allow Brett to confirm and order GPS units. We have 22 participants confirmed, comprising 10 Individual GPS participants ($900), 9 Group GPS participants (price reduced to $450) and 3 No-GPS participants ($300), across 12 standard rigs and 10 radials.

The program will run for 10 consecutive weeks (except as follows) commencing 14 October 2017.  The program will not be conducted on 21 October (Coast Championships), 18 November (State Championships), 23 December, 30 December, 6 January, 13 January or 20 January (holidays).  It will recommence after holidays on 27 January.  Other weeks may also be excluded by notification to participants*.

Inclusions*:
·         Individual GPS – limited on-water feedback upon sailing to the coach boat post finish, group debrief post-race, individual report including leg-by-leg GPS-based individual tactical analysis vs. the winner, and selected individual technical comments
·         Group GPS – limited on-water feedback upon sailing to the coach boat post finish, group debrief post-race, group report including GPS-based leg-by-leg snapshot of the whole fleet and general comments on overall preferred tactics, and selected individual technical comments
·         No GPS – limited on-water feedback upon sailing to the coach boat post finish, group debrief post-race, short group report (no GPS analysis) containing a race overview, and selected individual technical comments

* Notes: The program is conducted by Brett Beyer Sailing and all contractual arrangements are between the participant and Brett Beyer Sailing. Double Bay Sailing Club disclaims all liability, including liability for negligence. The program will run for 10 consecutive weeks except as notified.  Brett Beyer Sailing reserves the right to skip particular weeks at its discretion for reasons that may include, without limitation, conflicting coaching responsibilities, competition events, holiday periods and weather. If a week is skipped at the option of Brett Beyer Sailing, the program will be extended to ensure participants receive a 10-week program. If a participant is unable to attend a particular week when the program is conducted, the participant forfeits that week's entitlement and Brett Beyer Sailing does not have to make good. Any sample reports are indicative only and Brett Beyer Sailing does not warrant the form or content and accepts no liability if the form or content differs. Brett Beyer Sailing will record real-time technical observations on various participants using a Dictaphone or other means. However, due to the number of participants, and the practicalities involved with monitoring all participants, Brett Beyer Sailing may not provide individual on-water or written technical comments for each participant each week or at all. Brett Beyer Sailing accepts no responsibility for failure of electronic equipment including a failure to record GPS information, and the resulting inability to provide content that is similar to that shown in any sample reports.

Laser Sailing Report

It was a perfect day for our season-opening Club Championship races.   Balmy sunshine and 10-13kts ENE/NE.  We had an excellent fleet of 44 boats turn out to race.
 
Jonathan Stone officiated, ably assisted by Clare Alexander on the Jazzman and Richard George and Glenn Crane on the RIBs.
 

A Full House for the Season Opener.

It was a tricky day, with pressure on the left then pressure on the right then pressure on the left then somewhere else again.  Those in the know were in the know.  And the rest of us were not.
 
In the 4.7s, Race 1 was won by Brooke Wilson and Race 2 by Ryan Littlechild.  In the Radials, Dennis Kuhlman, Jack Littlechild and Zac West fought it out at the front, with the winners ultimately being Dennis in Race 1 and Jack in Race 2.  In the Standards, Mike Dunne’s practice for the Worlds was clearly showing with a first in the Race 1, ahead of Mark Bethwaite, and a third in Race 2, behind Mark Bethwaite and Michael Osborne, whose Mark Bethwaite-supplied numbering system appears to be working for him.  These are unofficial results, with the official results still pending publication.
 
Thank you for an excellent post-race BBQ to the kitchen crew – Paul Adam, Shirley Roach, Andrea Bergman, Susan Yates (our new canteen volunteer – please introduce yourself to her) and Mark Crowhurst (our rostered canteen volunteer for the day) – and of course to Peter Collie and helpers on the BBQ.

Brett Beyer Saturday Sailing Program

We now have 18 people signed up for the Brett Beyer Saturday Sailing Program.  This program will commence on 14 October and will run for ten weeks.
 
Subscriptions to this program close on Sunday.  So, if you want to participate (and we expect you will get real benefits if you do), please email training@dbsc.com.au by 5pm Sunday.  
 
You need to include your name, your rig size, your price point and your bib size.  Payment via trybooking will follow in next week’s newsletter.
