Boats for Sale? We have buyers

Guest User

The LTR crew are doing a great job introducing members to the club.  Some are looking to buy.  Realestate?  Maybe, but as we all know there are a multitude of spivs offering a range of stock.  Quality lasers, on the other hand, are "tightly held". If you're a seller, drop me a note (commodore@DBSC.com.au) and we'll let people know.

In a nod to failure of the paperless society, sellers should also consider posting an old school (ie printed) notice on the club's board.

Disclaimer: As with Tinder, DBSC is offering a matchmaker service only; we don't do representations, appraisals, valuations, warranties etc

Canteen Crew needed

Webmaster

One Saturday or Sunday (where we support the 18s folk) afternoon of volunteering by you and/or a loved one would very much appreciated to provide some relief from our regular canteen volunteers.

Regular shifts in the canteen would make you a club superstar!

If you are available, please let any of the regulars in the canteen know next time you are at the club.

PS: Your club fees are heavily subsidised by the income the club earns from the canteen, particularly, 18s shifts on Sunday and during the JJ Giltinan International Trophy.  Whilst some might not worry about paying higher fees, we all benefit from lower fees because it keeps our fleet size large and makes for better racing!

Season Opened

Guest User

21 full rigs and 16 Radials greeted the starters for CC1 and CC2 on Saturday 5th  sunny skies and a testing 8-15knot S/SE/E breeze made for good racing with the ability to gain (and also ungain!) positions on the works.

This week the spring Pointscore series commences. Usual 2pm start.

"Network effect" can occur in sailing

Webmaster

While the network effect is often discussed in terms of business, it also applies to sailing.

The more boats we have in the water the more competition everyone in the fleet enjoys.  Many moons ago when we had ten gun sailors and two beginners, it wasn't as much fun as having 30-40 sailors along the whole spectrum of abilities having their own intra-race competitions.

Additionally, starting lines are much more fun with lots of boats (that are trying to follow the rules),

Anyway, this Saturday is the official start of the season, so hopefully we have every rack vacant by the 1.30pm splash.  First race commences at 2.00pm.

PS: Race briefing is at 1.00pm and the SI can be found here.

DBSC regatta a huge success

Webmaster

The day started badly with The Wise Master temporily succumbing to years of toil in making the DBSC the greatest sailing club in the world, but we expect him to be back to his best in the coming weeks after some rest.

With volunteers starting to mill from the early morning, the Canteen Crew commenced their world class victualling. Needless to say no one hit the water hungry.

On the water we had +44 boats registered, and three great races.  The younger folk at DBSC delivered 2/3 of the podium positions the radial section of the NB Series.  4.7 and standard rig results were not as flash because of low participation (where were you?).

Enjoy the photos.

G2.0: Canadian wrap.

Where is the wind?

Where is the wind?

Going to a couple of international regattas, flying back in economy class and studying for school exams at 4am due to jet lag, has been a character building exercise for Grasshopper 2.0.

Having some fun before the racing.

Having some fun before the racing.

Coming off the back of a successful CORK International Regatta placing 2nd Overall in the first week of being in Kingston, Canada,  G2.0 launched into the 2015 Laser Radial World Championships in light, tricky and fickle breezes which saw 195 of the best in the world youth sailors compete on the freshwaters of Lake Ontario: 6 days of racing; 11 races' wind that ranged from 0 knots (mostly) to 30 knots (not enough); and, sometimes on the water for 7 1/2 hours straight. It took a lot of physical and mental capacity to stay focused.

After 5 days of racing the final day of racing was cancelled due to the wind conditions on Lake Ontario, and 6th place overall was bagged to everyone's delight.  To come away with a top 10 result in a field of the most talented Laser Radial Sailors in the World, all campaigning for the same outcome, was a huge achievement.

In G2.0’s own words:

"The worlds threw everything at us from too little wind to too much wind which made racing extremely hard.  With every race, I was forced to fight tooth and nail for every point, to ensure I was able to keep some sort of consistency in my results.

However, at the end of the day, key learning from the experience was when Dear Leader gave me a pre-regatta briefing on what to expect from Kingston, and he said, "make sure you do well in your school exams so in the future you won't have to fly back from regattas in cattle-class."

SYDNEY HERITAGE FLEET

Guest User

The Sydney a Heritage Fleet contacted us.......

Sydney Heritage Fleet, now in its 50th year ( www.shf.org.au ), is a unique Sydney maritime organisation which rescues, restores and operates a fleet of heritage marine vessels. Our seminal project is the 30 year restoration and regular operation of the 19th century square rigged sailing barque James Craig, launched in 1874, and one of only four barques in the world from the 19th century still capable of sailing. Sydney Heritage Fleet is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2015 (https://www.facebook.com/sydneyheritagefleet).

We would like to extend an invitation to the Double Bay Sailing Club Members to help us celebrate this milestone by:

In particular, we would be most grateful if you could mention the volunteer crew sailing opportunity and the fact that we offer Gift Certificates for a unique experience such as an offshore day cruise on James Craig or on one of our other heritage treasures by phoning 9298 3888.

Thank you for your consideration.
