Winter Championship / Point Score Races 19, 20 & 21

A 9kt westerly was already in place as the course was set, and didn’t change all morning. This made it easy for the support boat as no marks needed moving. A short start line made preparation paramount. Top mark near Clarke island and an incoming tide needed strategy and brilliant sunshine needed sunglasses.

A contingent of 30 Laser sailors, who launched promptly and paddled, sculled and/or flipflopped their way out of the bay.

Race 1 got off bang on time, but the rolling start for the ILCA7’s failed because the flag attendant was coaching his 4.7 son. No complaints though.

The wind held steady, the races proceeded rapidly and we were ashore at 10.

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 16, 17 & 18

I have to admit that it didn’t look promising when dawn broke on Sunday morning. There was not a breath of wind at the club and the wind readings from the harbour were not much more encouraging. And no sun to lift spirits. However, as you do, we put the flags up, dutifully launch the Paul Adam, loaded her up with marks and the rest of the kit and motored out have a look-see.

There was a slight breeze coming from the nor’-nor’-west, so we dropped a leeward mark at the mouth of Double Bay and returned to the club and briefed our contingent of 25 Laser sailors, who launched promptly and paddled, sculled and/or flipflopped their way out of the bay.

When Jazzman arrived at the course area, we had a decision to make. The forecast was for the wind to swing to the west, but later in the day. However, there were snippets of the westerly, and the slot between Clark Island and Darling Point looked promising for a windward leg. Fortunately, as it turned out, one of our guest racers from Rose Bay relayed that there was a bit of wind coming in from the north, so we made the call to drop the weather mark just off the Naval Buoy and run a northerly course.

Race 1 got off after about 15 minutes of AP. For the 4.7’s and Radials Leg 1 was a port tack fetch, and we on the RC felt a bit silly. However, the wind veered back to the north and freshened before the first Laser rounded the top mark, and so the remainder of the race was fine. Except for shortening the course for Race 3, we left the course alone. The northerly held until the last two legs of Race 3, when it backed west and softened again (as did our leeward mark!). All in all, the racing was reasonable, we felt.

Vale: Dene Bergman (Life Member: DBSC)

Dene and Andrea at our recent AGP

With much sadness, DBSC acknowledges the passing of Dene Bergman. Following a battle with cancer, Dene passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 16th.

Dene had been a stalwart of our club from the early 80’s. Backed by his avionics engineering career, Dene was the master of response boats, radio communications, and general maintenance at our club.

Dene had a wonderful sense of humour. So obsessed with keeping our premises in order, he produced many wonderful cartoons and signs around our club, which you can see. Like so many great volunteers at DBSC, Dene was always the first to volunteer and never sought recognition for his contributions.

Many of us had the privilege of catching up with Dene at our recent AGP. It was wonderful to see him enjoying the night.

We extend our love and support to Dene’s beautiful wife Andrea and their family.

PS. There is no plan for a funeral service; however, the club will formally recognize Dene at the commencement of our summer season in September.

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 13, 14 & 15

Steven London Reported:

It was a glorious morning for 33 Lasers on the last day of Autumn. The sun shone brightly and the Harbour sparkled with a steady 8-10 knot Westerly building to 15 knots at times toward the end of race 15.

It was short from racing at its best, where any advantage at the start followed by speedy mark rounding led to victory for a few, with tight racing in compressed fleets merging at times producing some tightly contested matches between rivals.

Winter Championship / Point Score Races 10, 11 & 12

It was looking like a highly dicey proposition for the fleet last Sunday morning. Early forecasts and glass-out conditions threatened to keep the fleet ashore, but the weather gods ultimately cooperated to deliver a window of highly competitive racing.

Against the odds, a gentle 4 to 8 knot westerly filled in across the harbour just in time for the morning session. The Race Committee took full advantage of the breeze, quickly rattling through Races 10, 11, and 12 of the Winter Championship and Point Score. Sailors enjoyed clean, tactical racing in the light air, getting three solid scorelines locked away before the morning breeze shut down.

The timing proved absolutely flawless; just as the final boats crossed the line to finish racing around 10:00 AM, the breeze disappeared entirely. The fleet managed to pack up, grab a warm coffee, and head into the clubhouse right as the harbour turned back into a mirror.

Double Bay Fleet Battles Through Harbour Drift-Off

More than 35 Laser sailors turned out at Double Bay Sailing Club on Sunday morning for a difficult and at times frustrating day of racing on Sydney Harbour. Sailors arrived to overcast skies and low cloud hanging across the harbour following overnight rain, while race officials headed out early were met with glassed-out conditions on the course area. It did not look promising.

Despite the lack of breeze, the large fleet launched enthusiastically, hoping the forecast would eventually deliver enough pressure for racing. After a bit of juggling by the race committee with the courses, two races were completed from the scheduled three-race program.

Race 1 (R7) provided and shift to NE but extremely light and tactical sailing, with competitors desperately searching for patches of pressure and favourable shifts around the harbour course. It then turned into a reaching course as the breeze rotated back to the WNW. 

Despite early promise in Race 2 (R8) with the new breeze, conditions deteriorated even further as the breeze almost completely disappeared across large sections of the course, leaving sailors drifting slowly toward the finish line in fading pressure and unstable wind patterns. The conditions became so difficult that only a handful of boats managed to finish within the 15-minute time limit window before the remainder of the fleet was scored DNF.

While the lack of wind prevented a full racing schedule, the impressive turnout once again highlighted the strength of Laser/ILCA sailing at Double Bay.
