Winter Sprints (King's Birthday Long Weekend)

A morning chill in the air and WNW 15 kts, building throughout the morning to gusts of 22 kts. The holiday weekend, morning cool, and forecast building breeze kept a few people away, with 13 keen starters arriving at the 0800 warning signal for Winter Sprints two-lap W/L courses.

Plenty of hard hiking paid dividends and some good rides downwind. Plenty of swims and a few testing their thermals, but all arrived back on the sunny deck with smiles.

Notable mention to Tim Heath for near perfect sailing in final race to lead for most of the race and excellent upwind speed and hiking, and only just pipped at the finish.

A special thanks to the RIB support team of John Sweeny and Isabelle Wilkins who were kept busy resetting the course as the breeze rotated and also being there to assist a few sailors who were challenged by conditions.

Race Report - Sunday 1 June 2025

Winter Championship & Point Score - Races 10, 11 & 12

1st day of winter, champagne conditions, and once all warmed up and forecast sunny 19-deg, it was a classic day on Sydney Harbour all to ourselves. Hughey came to sail with a nice steady 9 kt W breeze and the occasional puff of 10 kt from WNW. A good turn out of 27 boats and we managed full three races of 25-30 minutes each and separate starts for all fleets.

Stand out performances for the day were Harper Spacey in 4.7s with 2 wins, Alistair Sutherland in Radials for the perfect scorecard, whilst the Standards very kindly shared the chocolates.

New PSA charters available for Masters Worlds in Formia, Italy

PSA have sent 20 new (Australian built) boats to the UK recently. 10 to 15 of these boats will be available for charter for the 2025 Masters Worlds in Formia, Italy. So, if you like the idea of sailing a quality PSA new boat at the regatta, (rather than the other E6 ex-charters), please contact Brett Beyer and he'll secure you a boat. 

Same price as the ILCA charters. All available at regatta site as per usual.

Race Report - Sunday 25 May 2025

Winter Championship & Point Score

Beautiful views of Venus above a crescent moon rewarded the early riser. There was a strong turnout ready to sail. 

Only one race was sailed, unfortunately, as the harbour, both in colour and current, resembled the Amazon more than our usual wonderful locale, and the wind didn’t come in until much later in the day. The warm morning gave little hope of the morning westerly kicking in, that combined with the strong outgoing tide made for testing conditions. 

Here are the Winter Race 7 results:

Championship
4 - Ralph took the win as a bit of a wildcard, chasing down Charlotte and Zoe on the line as they battled the current. 
6 - An outstanding win from Andrew Cox, handling the tide and limited breeze expertly. .
7- Youth sailor Ed Alexander with the championship points, followed by Geoff Boscoe who had a solid race.. 

Point score
4 - Charlotte Jenkins.
6 - Andrew Cox got the double.
7- Edward Alexander also got the double. 

2025 DBSC Annual General Party and AGM

Last Friday about 68 members and guests attended our Annual General Party and AGM at the club, including Life Members: Shirley Roach and Peter Collie with apologies from Life Members that were unable to make it: Jonathan Stone, Paul Adam AM, Dean Bergman, Andrea Bergman, Mark Bethwaite AM, Julian Van Aalst, Jim Ley, John Vasey and Richard George.

Reports were presented by the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Treasurer, Learn to Race, Youth Co-ordinator and Canteen, which formed the minutes of the proceedings. Photos by Peter Collie.

Race Report - Sunday 18 May 2025

Winter Championship & Point Score

Week 2 of the Winter Series delivered a classic dose of winter weather.  It was cold, wet and dreary!  But despite the inclement weather, 25 boats fronted up for racing, which was a solid effort. The race team (Kirk Marcolina, Chris Berg, Tory Epworth and James Tudball) had their torches and wet weather gear on at 6:00am as they prepared for racing, and the big decision for the team was whether we would lay a westerly or southerly course.

The forecast was for a 20 knot southerly, but when we surveyed the conditions on-water at 7am, the winter westerly was established at a consistent 8 knots.  So, Race 1 was started under our typical westerly course, and it was looking okay until the fleet approached the top mark for the first time.  Suddenly the wind abated and we experienced 90-degree shifts on the course with the wind bouncing rapidly between the southerly and westerly directions. In the lead up to Race 1 we could see from live readings that Botany Bay was enjoying the 20-knot southerly, but it kept struggling to announce itself properly in Double Bay, due to the heavy rain and cloud cover that engulfed our course from the west.

We powered on with Race 1 but the last half turned into a bit of a soldier’s course.  So, we opted to reset the course in Double Bay and prepare for the southerly wind direction.  Despite our best efforts, Race 2 still experienced sizeable right-hand shifts from the west, which meant 70% of the upwind was on starboard tack. However, we cannot discredit Race 2 and say it was "flukey conditions", because the PRO's father, Ian Tudball (aka 'Captain Tugwash'), happened to achieve his first ever DBSC line honours victory in this race!  The win had the faintest tinge of a Steven Bradbury moment, as Alistair Sutherland and Rob Blum (who were first and second over the line) were OCS in the Radial fleet.  But the rules are the rules, and we can assure you that no bribes were passed from Captain Tugwash to the PRO.

After the completion of Race 2, we decided to postpone the start of Race 3 until the southerly filled in consistently.  Fortunately the rain and clouds cleared and by 10am the wind finally arrived.  Race 3 was then sailed in a lovely SSW breeze of approximately 15 knots.  In this race, another big first win came for Stephen Reid, who sailed brilliantly to win the Standards.  A fantastic effort, Stephen!!!

Other notable Championship performances:
- In the 4.7s Raph McLachlan won Race 1 and Zoe Allen won Races 2 and 3 with some excellent sailing.
- In the Radials Scott Hunter won Race 1 and Andrew Cox won Race 3.  Special mention to Daryl Lawrence for jagging a 2nd place in Race 2.
- In the Standards Hadrien Bourely and Quentin Burns won Races 1 and 2, respectively.

Point Score performances:
- In the 4.7s wins went to Charlotte Jenkins (Race 1) and Zoe Allen (Races 2 and 3)
- In the Radials wins went to Brendan Pollard (Race 1), Daryl Lawrence (Race 2) and Ian Tudball (Race 3)
- In the Standards, David Da Costa Enes won Race 1 and Tim Heath won Races 2 and 3.
