ILCA Metropolitan Championships

Over the weekend the club hosted the ILCA Metropolitan Championships with Rod Barnes taking the lead in organising and assisting the ILCA NSW PRO Andrew McLachlan.
Over the two days, six races were held in tricky conditions predominately from the east, trending from the south east on Saturday to the north east on Sunday. Sailors were treated to a bbq on the deck after racing on Saturday and bacon and egg sandwiches on Sunday morning thanks to Peter Collie manning the bbq, as well as the usual Double Bay special – toasties a la Paul and Shirley…
Many volunteers rolled up their sleeves to assist with the regatta, whether they were sailing or not, from boat park management, canteen assistance, on water support, general around the clubhouse facilitation and the full rig launch and trolley dolly squad. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this a special and well run event.
DBSC was well represented in all fleets across all age groups by men and women, boys and girls.

Volly of the week

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing administration and management of racing.
This week, we’re saying a big thank you to Rod Barnes. Rod Barnes is the sailing captain at DBSC and in recent weeks has planned and executed the “metros” as a regatta par excellence, coordinating volunteers and forsaking his own racing to oversee the on water management over the weekend. We are very grateful for the excellent job he has done.

Winter sailing

At Double Bay Sailing Club we race all year round!
The 2023 Winter series will commence on Sunday 14 May and run weekly until 30 July (except during NSW school holidays). It’s a great way to maintain your sailing fitness and the early morning sail means you have the rest of the day to chill out or cook a Sunday roast!
We are currently setting up the Roster and need all members who are NOT sailing in Winter to email Tim at roster@dbsc.com.au to let him know.
Membership subscriptions and canteen tabs

Our Membership and Sailing year is from 1 May 2023 to 30 April 2024. The renewal of annual membership subscriptions is issued each year at the beginning of April and due before 1 May for the 2023-24 sailing season.
This process is automated, and an email invoice is issued through the RevSport system with Australian Sailing. It is important that membership subs are paid on time as many of our major payments are due during the winter period. Please look out for the email when it comes, and we would appreciate prompt payment before 1 May 2023. If you have any problems with the invoice ,please contact secretary@dbsc.com.au
Please be aware that if you pay online with "Pin" payments there is a processing fee which you can avoid by paying with BSB transfer instead (payment details are on the invoice).
It is also time to settle any old accounts in the canteen log book. Please pay these at the canteen on Saturday by EFTPOS or cash. If you are not able to attend the club in the coming weeks, please email treasurer@dbsc.com.au to arrange a bank transfer.

Race report 18 March 2023

Races 11 and 12 of the Autumn pointscore were sailed on Saturday with a fleet of roughly 15 boats in each of the ILCA6 and ILCA7 divisions.
With a run in tide, and a building North-Easter, all 4 races were started very cleanly and very punctually at 1400 and 1500 respectively. The first race was sailed in about 12-14 knots with the second race seeing 18 knots with gusts of 22 knots.
Regardless of the idyllic autumnal conditions, the race committee of Nick Pellow (PRO), Kirk Marcolina (LtRaR), Richard Holstein (COTD), David Evenden (CoCOTD) and Richard Au (RIB Reserve) were kept busy throughout the day with various issues on the day including but not limited to:
an anchor line caught in a prop
which lead to a lost anchor
a new anchor being rigged (thanks Luke Parker for the prompt action and handiwork!)
a Jazzman pre-race battery check
a debooming requiring a tow back to Rose Bay (thanks Richard Au)
an OCD PRO looking to give the fleet 4 perfect broad reach legs for the day
The racing included some exciting leads, lead changes, penalty turns and the odd photo opportunity.
Massive congratulations to Coté for leaving the club on a high with wins in both Race 11 and 12 in the ILCA6s. Excellent sailing Coté - the club is going to miss you and we hope you return one day soon.
In the ILCA7s, Chris Berg won race 11 with Tim Heath winning race 12!

Farewell Coté and José

This week we farewell our resident Chileans Coté and José, who return to home for several months before heading to London to further their studies. We have loved having both of them in our sailing community and our twilight and Saturday fleets.
We wish them all the best and hope to see them return to the club in the future.
Rules clinic - a reminder for everyone!

If you did not attend the rules clinic on Monday evening, a second, repeat even is being held on Monday 3rd April from 7:00pm – 8:30pm.
The training clinics on the Racing Rules of Sailing are part of our commitment to better and fairer racing. Each session has identical content and will be run by Erica Kirby, national umpire and judge. The expectation is all sailors will attend one of the clinics.

DBSC is hosting the 2023 ILCA NSW & ACT Metropolitan Championships this weekend! If you are not intending to sail but would like to assist with on-water support over the weekend, please send an email to rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au.
ENTRIES
Enter online or at the club until 11:30am on Saturday 25th March. You must be entered to race!
There will be an option to sign on/off via SMS so that sailors who have pre-entered online can deploy from other harbour clubs for the event.

Boats and trailers can be left overnight outside the clubhouse. However, security will not be available.

The DBSC canteen will be open to offer our famous toasties on both days and breakfast on Sunday. Be sure to stick around after sailing on Saturday for a casual drink and BBQ on the deck.
