60 seconds with Paige Caldecoat

On Saturday we welcomed another new member, Paige Caldecoat, who showed the radial fleet how to navigate the Dardenelles.

How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?
I was around 10 when I had my first sailing experience, but didn’t sail myself until I was closer to 12.

If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy?
It’s really generic but I would probably buy a Bieker moth, or maybe if we are getting really into it a Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42. 

What is your ultimate sailing goal?
My ultimate sailing goal is to go to the Olympics in a laser. I’m also currently working on broadening my sailing horizons by getting into foiling and big boats. 

Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser?
My boat name is Kinky Kylie, it’s an eye catcher but it’s named after my sporting hero Sebastian Vettel’s 2011 RB7. My European boat is named Hungry Heidi after his RB9. 

If you could add any ingredient to DBSC's world’s best toasties – what would it be?
It’s a crime but I’ve never had a double bay toastie! My favourite growing up was a spaghetti toastie. 

What are your second/third favourite hobbies (assuming sailing is #1)?
My other favourite hobbies include reading, and cycling. 

Describe what you do for work in less than five words?
Hang out on boats. 

What is your next holiday destination and why?
My next holiday destination will be the Gold Coast, I have to take advantage when we go to training camps! 

What is your favourite TV show, movie, and/or book?
My favourite book is The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know?
Something interesting about me is that this will be the first year since 2017 where I will spend more than 5 months in Australia.

Annual club picnic

The Family Adventure Picnic has become a tradition at DBSC. -Join us for this year's adventure (which will likely be) to CAMP COVE BEACH - on SUNDAY 5 FEBRUARY pending favourable conditions.

We love Camp Cove Beach for its decent parking, friendly coffee kiosk, and kid friendly waves (please bring your kids!). We are looking forward to seeing you AND the rest of your clan :-)

We'll set up camp at the east end of the beach. It’s a 12pm splash @DBSC, with picnic lunch served at 1pm, followed by an afternoon cruise home.

The cost will be $10 per head, plus drinks that you can add to your canteen account at the end of the day.

ILCA NSW & ACT Metro Championships DBSC

DBSC is hosting the Metros on 25th and 26th March.

To successfully run the event, we need volunteers to assist with organisation and to help out on the day.  If you are intending to compete, your friends or family may be able to assist on rescue or start boats.

On the day we need:

  • Skippers and crew for the Paul Adam and Dean Bergman and one additional support boat. (Note: you will not be able to compete if you take on this role)

  • Skipper and crew to assist the PRO on the Jazzman. (Note: you will not be able to compete if you take on this role)

  • Skipper and finishers for the finish boat. (Note: you will not be able to compete if you take on this role)

  • Rigging area coordinator. (You will still be able to compete)

  • Parking coordinator. (You will still be able to compete)

  • Other general assistance. (You will still be able to compete) 

If you can assist or you have friends and family willing to help out, please email rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au so he can get things rolling.

Race report 14 January 2023

When the morning clouds cleared we were greeted with a glorious sunny afternoon and a gradient NEer for the start of the autumn point score series. We trialled two new innovations this week; 1. the new Sailor app finishing feature which ran extremely smoothly with results being live as we enjoyed a drink on the deck post-racing - thanks to the Handicapping team of Daryl and Jeff helping on the Jazzman. 2. The PFD black flag after Pat dragged the Radial fleet over the start line in race 1 after he'd told us "all the flags are on the Jazzman" (except the black flag wasn't!).

In the 16-20 knot gradient we saw some great battles at the front of the fleet, with some great rides downwind with a small outgoing tight, and the fleet generally hugging Pt Piper as the sea breeze influence brought the breeze further right. Congrats to the sole ILCA 4 sailor Sara Bruce (but was well and truly mixing it with the ILCA 6's), Peter Collie & David Airey for taking the wins on handicap in the ILCA 6 and Nick Pellow and Max for the wins in the ILCA 7.

Last but not least, big thanks to David Murphy for his invaluable support in running the race, and John Conroy and Andrew Craker as COTD and CoCOTD who can now attest that the new buoy anchors have exceptional holding strength!

Many thanks to Paul and Shirley for driving the toasties in the canteen with the assistance of Kerryn Smith and Daryl Lawrence.

Volly of the week!

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing administration and management of racing.

This week, we’re saying a big thank you to Rob Bruce who rolled up his shorts and assisted every single sailor back onto shore on Saturday.

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!

SailGP watch party

Double Bay Sailing Club is thrilled to be selected in the upcoming SailGP adopt a club program .We have been paired with Team Canada, skippered by Phil Robertson and on Saturday we hosted a watch party after racing.

Stay tuned for further happenings in the lead up to the Sydney for event in Sydney on 18-19 February. If you are interested in helping coordinate our participation, please contact james.tudball@dbsc.com.au.
