After a washout last week, Wednesday twilight racing is back on this week.

Racing will be informal, off Clarke Island, with rabbit starts. Splash at 17:00 for racing from 17:30 (or a soon as you can make it). If you need any inspiration, or a compelling argument for your boss, watch this video!

We have a WhatsApp group for coordination. If you have not been added to the group and intend to come to twilights, please email newsletter@dbsc.com.au and request to be added.

PRO Training with Hugh Leicester, Saturday 22 October 8.30am to 12 noon

Guest User

Don’t miss the morning of Saturday October 22 with our guest, Hugh Leicester, joining us at DBSC to talk about Laser course management and his experience as a World Sailing representative at the recent Olympics.

Hugh has great credentials.  He’s been running ILCA World Championships for 20 years, is currently the ILCA World Council Vice President and is a finalist for the 2022 National Sailing Awards as Official of the Year. Hugh recently officiated at the Tokyo Olympics.

For all of us helping our club with race management in any way, we need you to come along to hear Hugh impart his knowledge about race management.  You’ll learn so much from one of the worlds best.

Please confirm your attendance with Martin White by email. If you have any questions, feel free to call Martin on 04106 27743.

Annual Competency Training Saturday 29 October at 10am

Guest User

Coming out of COVID, we’re all rusty on the core skills we need as members and volunteers.

On Saturday 29 October we will be running a competency day prior to racing. The training will be conducted from 10am to 12pm and will cover:

  • Incident management and Basic Life Support

  • Running a good race (NB this is useful for everyone, not just PROs)

  • Safe use of the RIBs, davits, and radio

Please ensure you have done the following pre-reading:

Emergency Rescue: https://www.dbsc.com.au/emergency-rescue

PRO and Running a Race guidelines: https://www.dbsc.com.au/pro (both PRO and Running a Race)

COTD Guidelines: https://www.dbsc.com.au/cotd

Being current with club procedures is a serious obligation, and attendance is expected for all club members. Start will be at 1000, and we should be finished by 1145, so there will be time for some rigging and a toastie before the pointscore action begins! It’s also a good time to connect with clubmates old and new.

The Women's Regatta and coaching clinics

We have organised a series of training clinics leading up to The Women's Regatta in December, if you haven't been on the water for a while or just want to improve your skills…

The clinics will be held on Saturday mornings from 8:00am – 11:00am and will be coached by Sylvie Stannage at Double Bay Sailing Club.  You can either attend one or all of them.

The following clinics are available to be booked in advance:

  • Saturday 22 October – Upwind Technique

  • Saturday 12 November – Downwind Technique

  • Saturday 26 November – Race Starts

Visit thewomensregatta.com.au to get all the info on the training clinics as well as the Women's Regatta itself - to be held 3 December, a one-day event will include races on Sydney Harbour, great food, entertainment, and activities.

For the men in the club, we will be looking for volunteers on the day of the regatta (3 December). Please mark your diaries as there will be no club sailing on the day!

Race report 1 October 2022

Guest User

As reported by our PRO, Robert Vann:

Scattered showers in the morning cleared nicely for our afternoon racing, with a strong turnout for sprints over the long weekend. Sailors enjoyed an 8-12 knot south-easterly breeze in an ebbing tide which led to some tricky racing between Clark Island and Point Piper. The sprint courses were the standard 2X windward/leeward, running for 10-15 minutes apiece.

It was great to see some tight racing at the top of both fleets resulting in a mix of race winners. Standouts in the radial fleet included Scott Hunter, Quentin Burns, Alistair Southerland, Martin White and Katie McHugh. The standard fleet was led by Jules Hall, Luke Parker and Geoff Kirk with Stuart Holdsworth traveling down from Pittwater to join in.

Thanks to Andrew Simpson COTD, Ryan Aldrich (co-COTD) and Campbell Patton (LTRAR) for their assistance in race management.

Many thanks also to Paul and Shirley for keeping the toasties in plentiful supply with the assistance of Julian van Aalst and David Airey.

The club’s calendar can be subscribed to here (strongly recommended).

Volly of the week

Guest User

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.

This week we’d like to thank Richard George. While the club is working on a better solution for the “grassed” area in conjunction with local council, Richard has taken the initiative to fix the boggy area at the entrance to the club house. We greatly appreciate Richard pitching in to find a solution for an ongoing issue. Many thanks!

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!
