This weekend there will be sprint racing at the club as the State Masters’ Championships are also on. The club has a solid contingent of competitors attending the regatta at Port Stephens. Wish them well – it’s forecast to blow!

This weekend the club will also be home to the Australian Championship for the 18 foot skiffs. Please expect to have the boats in the boat park and using the clubhouse (and possibly conducting repairs during the evenings.

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.

This week we’d like to thank Andrew Simpson. On Saturday as the club was packed up and kitchen door closed, a beep beep beep noise was heard by the final attendees. After some detective work to figure out where the noise coming from it transpired the fridge door had been left open. With no key to access the canteen. members still in attendance scratched their heads on how to close it. Andrew Simpson put his structural engineering prowess to use and using a carbon top section was able to close the fridge door through the grill ensuring ingredients for the 18’ skiff toasties didn’t perish overnight.

Thank you to Clare Alexander for sharing this story and photos.

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!

Be cool!

The DBSC Sailing instructions govern racing at DBSC alongside the Racing Rules of Sailing and the rules and by-laws of the International Laser Class Association. All club racers should be familiar with these.

DBSC does not permit formal protests, as the adversarial environment this can create is inconsistent with our culture, and the time commitment this can require is unreasonable for our volunteers. The success of racing depends on an “honour system” based on the principles of good sportsmanship and adherence to the Racing Rules and the Sailing Instructions by all participants.

Please be sure to familiarise yourself with the sailing rules and undertake your penalties when incidents arise. On Saturday there were a number of people hitting the top mark who did not do their penalties, and this is uncool, especially in a championship race.

On Saturday races 11 and 12 of the spring season were completed in a moderate south easterly breeze sailed between Shark Island and Point Piper.

PRO Jules Hall oversaw racing and was ably assisted by Thomas Beregi (LTRAR) and Tanya Hall, with on water assistance from Mark Lewkovitz (COTD) and Andrew Dixson (co-COTD). Off the water, Richard Au and Murray Stone assisted Paul and Shirley in the canteen.

Our race winners were Michael Osborn and Daniel Costandi in the standard rigs while Ian Tudball and Andrew Craker each had a win in the radial fleet.

This concludes the Spring Season Pointscore. Congratulations to our victors.

Standard: Mike Dunne (see all results)

Radial: Alistair Sutherland (see all results)

More photos from Tanya Hall on the day have been uploaded to The Top Mark.

This weekend is a busy one at the club.

In racing, we will be competing in Club Championship heats 5 & 6 which will be followed by our regular club championship bbq.

After racing we will also be raising a glass to Jules Hall and Jan ‘Clogs’ Scholten for their success in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race two handed division. The pair are the inaugural overall winners claiming a clean sweep of the overall prizes, winning IRC, ORCi and PHS. Clogs will also be racing with us on the day.

On Sunday, DBSC is once again hosting the Kutti Bay picnic day. Family and friends are welcome to join – whether they sail over with members or jump in a RIB transporting provisions. Splash will be at midday. For catering purposes, please RSVP here.

This week we’d like to thank Steven London for his excellent service to the club. Steven has stepped up tothe role as club secretary following Emily’s departure. His contribution however over the past year has been significant – maintaining the volunteer user guides, assisting with onboarding new members and volunteering with the Learn to Race program, and taking awesome photos to mention but a few.

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Do you know of someone who deserves a mention? If so, email us and tell us why they should be club member of the week.
