This weekend a contingent of Double Bay sailors will be “representing” at the Open State Championships at Georges River Sailing Club. We wish them the very best sailing.

As is customary on regatta weekends the club will conduct sprint racing. Please note the course format differs on sprint days and can be found in the Sailing Instructions.  The start sequence for the day will be advised by the PRO at the briefing.

The regatta also means that Learn to Race will not be on this weekend.

Race Report 20 November 2021

Guest User

Double Bay Sailing Club was delighted to host our friends from Vaucluse Yacht Club (VYC) on Saturday for the first leg of the annual Vaucluse Challenge, a traditional rivalry between the two clubs since 1959.

Two races were held in Rose Bay, with a 14 knot gusty and shifty south, south-easterly breeze that kept racers on their toes amongst the yachts and Etchells, some of which weren’t too happy about sharing the bay. The on water racing was managed by Daryl Lawrence (PRO) and John Verco (LTRAR) with on water assistance from Justin Davey (COTD), Christine Patton (co-COTD) and Derek Hand (CSO).

After racing sailors retreated to the Double Bay clubhouse with guests from VYC where they enjoyed tall tales with a sausage sizzle and some drinks. Many thanks to Shirley and Paul for preparing the post-race refreshments as well as the toasties before racing, with the assistance of Diana Chen and John Chesterman.

Byron Georgouras, VYC’s Commodore has sent the following note to DBSC members.

“A fantastic round one of the Vaucluse x Double Bay Friendly Series! A well laid course in Rose Bay saw some challenging and enjoyable racing in both fleets with a high-level of competition from both clubs.

A huge thanks to the race committee of Double Bay for setting up such excellent racing in the shifting southerly conditions. Further to this, thanks to all the Double Bay sailors for the friendly spirit on the course, it was great to see everyone out there and to be welcomed to your end of the harbour with open arms.

Finally, a big thank you to the club for hosting us on the balcony after racing for a delicious BBQ and cold beers. Great to spend time at your beautiful club and reconnect with some of the DBSC members after such a long break between drinks.

We are looking forward to returning the enjoyable racing and fine hospitality on 19 February 2022 for the 90th Anniversary of the Vaucluse Regatta and Round 2 of the VYC/DBSC Friendly.”
— Byron Georgouras, Commodore VYC

The races were also heats 5 and 6 for the DBSC pointscore series. Zander Bijkerk cleaned up in both races in the standard rig fleet, as did Alistair Sutherland in the radial fleet.

Vee Jay 90th birthday

Guest User

The Vaucluse Junior, affectionately known as the Vee-Jay (VJ), was a 11ft 6” two-handed skiff conceived by Sylvester (Sil) Rohu and designed by Charles Sparrow in 1931. The design spawned tens of thousands of builds across Australia and overseas with competitive racing until the 1990s. Champions of the class continued on to win Olympic gold, world championships and the 1983 America’s Cup (John Bertand).

To celebrate the 90th birthday of the VJ, Vaucluse Yacht Club (founded by Sil Rohu in 1939) will be hosting a special event on the morning of Saturday the 11th of December 2021 featuring a display of classic VJs from across the era, a breakfast Q&A with some of the original champions of the class and a VJ sail past.

Some of Double Bay’s members began their sailing careers in the VJ and they are invited to attend this special event.

Details:

Date: Saturday 11th December 2021

Volly of the week

Guest User

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.

This week we are featuring James Tudball. Each week after racing, James can be seen returning to the waterfront to help other sailors with trolleys and hauling their boats up the ramp with a smile. Sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness are what binds our sailing community together.

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Do you know of someone who deserves a mention? If so, email us and tell us why they should be club member of the week.

Twilight Sailing

Guest User

Twilight sailing is on tonight and the Brett Beyer Training Program is confirmed. This means a top mark will be laid for sprint racing, with a start determined on the water. A two minute starting sequence will apply unless otherwise advised on the water.

Last week we had over 20 boats attend for a fantastic twilight session. This week, the forecast (at the time of writing) is a 16-18 knots nor-easter! You’d be mad to miss the smile on Pat Levy’s face in this!

More drinks?

Members are reminded to pay for the drinks taken from the club fridges, including at the BBQ after club championship racing. Bottles of wine may be provided on the table at the BBQ, and (only) these will be complimentary.
