Race report Saturday 23 October

On Saturday Alistair Sutherland (PRO) and Murray Stone (LTRAR) conducted five sprint races in what could be described as perfect conditions. Nearly 50 boats turned out for a sunny 26 degree day with moderate north easterly winds. 

Many thanks to our on water crew assisting – Thomas Beregi (COTD) and Kim Ketelby (CSO). The on water team provided an excellent preparatory session for pointscore racing which resumes this week.

Early start this Saturday

Members are asked to arrive at the club at 8am this Saturday as the club will be hosting a working bee before racing. We are looking forward to getting the members together to tackle this much-needed and important event in the calendar as a team.

The working bee is something all members of the club are expected to attend each year. If you are (absolutely) unable to attend on 30 October, please email the commodore so you can be allocated a job to complete. 

Removing the plant growing in the water tank will be one of the tasks for Saturday

Season opening soiree

The rapidity at which the club has been able to resume activities, combined with the ongoing restrictions on hospitality venues, means that the club has been unable to organise and host the pre-season dinner for a second year in a row. 

On the other hand, the club is resuming the club championship BBQs on the deck at the club. The first of these will be on Saturday 6 November. This year we are extending the invitation to the club championship BBQ to members and their families after racing. It’s going to be great fun! 

What rubbish!

Members are reminded to use the appropriate bins when disposing of rubbish. As a reminder, red lid bins are for landfill waste, while yellow lid bins are for recyclable waste. Please use the container deposit bin for drink containers for which we are able to claim a container deposit.

Unfortunately, one of the tasks this weekend is sorting out the rubbish in the yellow and blue lid bins and then washing them, as people have been using them for general waste. YUCK!

Heron, Laser and Hanse 50ft

What is your ultimate sailing goal?
To do well at top level regattas and to enjoy sailing with my family and friends.

Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser?
I just bought 'Peb' from Chrstine - I will think about a name. I also sail a Heron and my wife has crewed with me a few years and she named our Heron 'She Said Yes'. Maybe that would be a good name for the laser too!

If you could add any ingredient to DBSC's world’s best toasties – what would it be?
Haven't seen the world's best toasties so wil let you know and looking forward to seeing what they are. Maybe Jalapenos.

What are your second/third favourite hobbies (assuming sailing is #1)?
Walking and any water based activities with my family. Oh yeah movies and going to restaurant - forgot about this things.

Describe what you do for work in less than five words?
Lawyer (consumer law) for businesses.

What is the first international destination you will travel to (once we're allowed) and why?
Greece - because its awesome and havent been there.

What is your favourite TV show, movie, and/or book?
Anchorman (Will Ferrel)

Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know?
I am married with 3 boys (aged 19, 16 and 13) who sailed herons with me over the years. I have a greyhound (Bella), pug-shitzu (Pug-a-latte) and 2 cats (Stripey and Catniss).

Season Opener and Working - Bee 30 October

Pointscore racing will resume on 30 October and the club will be holding a working bee in the morning to ensure the club is race ready. After conducting the working bee virtually last year, we are looking forward to getting the members together to tackle this much-needed and important event in the calendar as a team.

The working bee is something all members of the club are expected to attend each year. It is appreciated that two weeks is short notice, but the club needs a bit of love before the season starts.

If you are (absolutely) unable to attend on 30 October, please email the commodore so that you can be allocated a job to complete. 

Race Report - 16 October 2021

On Saturday the club was able to host sprint racing. Around 20 sailors were greeted with a strong gusty, westerly winds in the 25knt range that swung to the south as the afternoon progressed requiring a change of course after the first race.

Given the Sprint racing format, no formal results were recorded however there were many high speed “rides” with smiles to match. Sylvie Stannage revelled in the conditions and enjoyed “waves that she hadn’t seen for some time”.

Many thanks to the on water team who made racing happen at short notice - Race Officer Ian Alexander (provider of race footage and commentary), Captain of the Day John Conroy, and Covid Safety Officer Christine Patton assisted on water by Andrew Craker and John Vasey.

This coming weekend will be another day of sprint racing before formally kicking off scored racing for the season.
