Winter series starts this week!

Guest User

The Winter series kicks off this weekend on Sunday 2 May, with the first warning signal at 8.30am.

There will be three races of approx. 30 minutes each per week (weather permitting), a combined start, and the standard (yet shorter) DBSC format: triangle-sausage-sausage. The quick format will keep us warm!

All sailors are encouraged to participate and there will be championship and point score trophies in radial and standard divisions, as well as a radial Masters+ award.

Updated Sailing Instructions

Guest User

Our Sailing Instructions have been updated and are available online. Being among the best laser sailing clubs in the world, it’s important that we are all familiar with our rules of engagement.

There have been some changes to our Sailing Instructions for the winter series including:

  • Winter Championship starts will be a single 5-minute countdown for all fleets, with 4.7s and Radials starting (together) after 3 minutes, and Standards starting after 5 minutes

  • The Winter Championship will include both scratch and handicapped scoring each week

  • Coaching on the course is no longer permitted (this does not affect the BBWP as advertised)

The PRO guide and the COTD instructions have also been updated to reflect these changes.

The discard rules have also changed for ALL our racing series (year-round) as follows:

6-8 races = 1 drop

9-11 races = 2 drops

12-14 races = 3 drops

15-16 races = 4 drops

17-19 races = 5 drops

20-22 races = 6 drops

23-25 races = 7 drops

26-28 races = 8 drops

29-30 races = 9 drops

Can't control the weather...

Guest User

While Brett Beyer may be DBSC’s esteemed SuperCoach, there are some things he can’t do - like control the weather… As BBSP subscribers are aware, our last Club Championship races were abandoned owing to a lack of wind.

Brett, who made the trip down on the day, was unable to provide the BBSP as there was no racing. He has kindly offered to refund subscribers. If you would like to request a refund, can you please EMAIL your bank details to Andrew Cox.

Help a traveller out!

James Mitchell (Laser 214414) is planning to come from Melbourne to Double Bay for the ILCA anniversary event (30 May). He will be travelling in a VW Transporter RV and is looking to park outside someone’s house with access to bathroom facilities for 2-3 nights and willing to pay for this.

Is there someone nearby the club that can help James? If so, can you please EMAIL Emily Ball to connect with James.

How the club has changed!

Jim Ley, a founding member of DBSC tells us, “The club became a social mecca for kids from Double Bay and adjoining suburbs. It was a meeting place where teenagers gathered to work on their boats and socialise. The club took on its role as a venue to foster social events such as club dances and so on, it became a popular meeting place for kids in the area. The club at one time had a football team.”

It is interesting to speculate on the team and positions for the 2021 season – Andrew Cox or Pat Levy at halfback?

The final weekend of club championship racing was a fizzer, with racing abandoned owing to no wind.

Most members stayed around for an end of season BBQ lunch on the clubhouse deck. Many thanks to the helpers rostered on for the day, as well as those extras who helped Shirley with salads while the bbq was lit up for steaks and sausages!

This week brought to a close the 2020/21 Club Championship. In the Standard fleet Rod Barnes was victorious with 26.0 points, with Ian Alexander 2nd (32.2 points) and Luke Parker 3rd (36 points). In the Radials Sylvie Stannage showed us the way with 22 points over Evie Saunders (27 points) and James Tudball (29 points). Congratulations to our series winners!
