As those that came to the State Masters in Jervis Bay will attest, travelling to regattas with the club is loads of fun. This year we had a record contingent from our club, and we’d love to keep momentum this going at more events.

Rod Barnes has done a great job of coordinating travelling members this year and has kindly volunteered to continue this effort. He is seeking to gauge member interest in upcoming events (some of them are a while off).

South Pacific Laser Masters, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (QLD) - 9-12 July 2021

NSW/ACT Coast Championships, South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club - 23-24 October 2021

2022 Oceania & Australian Open & Youth Championships, Freemantle Sailing Club (WA) - 1-8 January 2022

NSW/ACT State Masters Championships, Bay Sailing Centre Port Stephens - 5-6 February 2022

2022 Australian Masters Championships, Westernport Yacht Club (VIC) - 25-28 February 2022

Please let Rod know if you are interested in attending any of these events by contacting him here.
[NB. This does not lock you in, confirm your commitment nor enter the event on your behalf.  We are simply collecting names of interested people at this stage.]

On Sunday 18th April we had 16 people attend first aid training at the club. This is an important event on our calendar as it ensures our commitment to safety remains a priority. The training is subsidised by the club and benefits not only our club members, but family and friends.

Following 4 hours of online training, attendees did a morning of practical learning that covered a range of topics including legal obligations, deadly marine creatures, and when to use a tourniquet, as well as practicing CPR on adult, child, and infant dummies.

This is a gentle reminder that that membership fees for 2021/22 are due 30 April 2021. Please email Emily if you have not yet received your invoice.

The Double Bay Sailing Club Canteen and its world-famous toasties are also closing in on end of season, which means it’s time to close off our canteen tabs. This is a friendly reminder to settle your canteen tab this weekend. Our lovely canteen team has the eftpos machine on charge, ready for your payment!

60 Seconds With Victoria Whitby

1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? When I first stepped on a boat it was my uncle’s 33ft SeaRay motor cruiser when I was about 11, then did a competence certificate at the RYA aged 15 for small boats, and the first time I went on sailing yacht was in 2005 at a work regatta in the Isle of Wight, UK. On moving to Sydney in 2006 I learned to sail properly, and did my first Sydney to Hobart on DHL in 2007. Few more miles covered since then... decided to try Lasers a few years ago for a change.

2. If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? With no limits... would probably buy a J Class classic yacht or a new Laser.

3. What is your ultimate sailing goal? To have fun!

4. Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser? Maclaren is named after the sponsor from the first regatta it sailed in years ago.

5. If you could add any ingredient to DBSC's world’s best toasties – what would it be? Tabasco sauce.

6. What are your second/third favourite hobbies (assuming sailing is #1)? Mmm tough one, second favourite windsurfing, third favourite tied between coastal walking / bike riding.

7. Describe what you do for work in less than five words? GM Finance @ Lendlease

8. What is the first international destination you will travel to (once we're allowed) and why? UK / France to see my family.

9. What is your favourite TV show, movie, and/or book? Movie: Amelie. Book: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Ronald Dahl. TV show: Below Deck (guilty pleasure!)

10. Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know? I studied in France before moving to Aus and wanted to be a journalist / sports reporter for Formula 1.

Race Report

Kirk Marcolina

Heats 11 and 12 of the Autumn Pointscore were raced under beautiful sunny April skies, and a tricky, building Westerly breeze. The winners, after handicapping, were: Standards, Ashley Deacon (Heat 11) and Michael Osborne (Heat 12), and radials, Ian Tudball (Heat 11) and David Huber (Heat 12). Thanks to Mark Bethwaite, David Newman, Candice Cushway and Julian Van Aalst for their on-water race management and support, as well as Luke Parker and Daryl Lawrence (along with Paul and Shirley) for their help in the canteen.

This week brought to a close the 2020/21 Autumn Pointscore. Congratulations to our series winners: in the Standard fleet Michael Osborne was victorious with 49.5 points, with Steven London 2nd (63 points) and Mike Dunne 3rd (73 points); in the Radials: Alistair Sutherland finished first with 68.5 points over Kate McHugh (79.5 points) and David Huber (91 points).

This Saturday - End of Season BBQ

Kirk Marcolina

Make sure you stick around after racing this Saturday for an end of season BBQ on the clubhouse deck. Covid restrictions have meant that we haven’t done a lot of socializing this year. We look forward to taking advantage of the improving conditions to gather and celebrate the last Club Champs of the season.

This Sunday – First Aid Course

Kirk Marcolina

For those of you who signed up for the DBSC first aid training, remember to complete your online training modules before the course this Sunday. We look forward to seeing you all primed and ready to go in person on Sunday morning – training is from 9am to noon at the clubhouse.
