DBSC Ski Weekend: 20-22 August

Diana Chen

If you love snow sports as much as sailing, the DBSC Social Club are seeking expressions of interest from those who would like to hit the slopes together over the weekend of 20-22 August. Plan is to stay in Thredbo Village 19/20/21 August (3 nights), ski/snowboard, eat/drink, and be merry. Accommodation is already running low, so please email Andrew ASAP if you’re interested.

From Double Bay Sailing Club’s inception, the VJ Class dominated until the mid 1960s. In the 1962/63 season, DBSC hosted the Australian VJ Championships. However, in 1966 OK Dinghies were introduced as the senior sailing class with about 10 boats. DBSC hosted an OK regatta in November 1966 where there were 25 boats entered.

60 Seconds With Campbell Patton

Diana Chen

1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat? I was probably about 4 when I first sailed Etchells with my dad.

2. If money (and sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? Nacra 17

3. What is your ultimate sailing goal? To compete in the Olympics.

4. Tell us the story behind the name of your Laser? Swizzle is named after one of Bermuda’s most popular drinks, the Rum Swizzle (VERY YUMMY), made with Bermuda Goslings Black Seal Rum!

5. If you could add any ingredient to DBSC's world’s best toasties – what would it be? It would be chicken. I love my chicken.

6. What are your second/third favourite hobbies (assuming sailing is #1)? Surfing and playing music (mainly viola).

7. Describe what you do for work in less than five words? Commercial diver in marine construction.

8. What is the first international destination you will travel to (once we're allowed) and why? I’m in Bermuda right now and I’m travelling to Malta for a 6 week training camp (fingers crossed).

9. What is your favourite TV show, movie, and/or book? Favourite show: Prison Break. Favourite movie: Good Will Hunting. Favourite book: either the Power of One or Lord of the Rings.

10. Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know? By the age of 16 I had travelled to/through 32 different countries (mostly thanks to sailing!). Also I have 4 nipples lol 😅

Diana Chen

With a marine wind warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology and poor visibility due to the heavy rainfall, racing was cancelled to ensure the safety of the race officers and 10 or so sailors that braved the wet & wild weather to get to the club. Thanks to our volunteers: Rod Barnes, Richard Au, Andrew Craker, John Verco, Andrew Simpson, Peter Collie, Shirley Roach, and Paul Adam.

Winter Series

Diana Chen

Are you sad that the Autumn series is coming to an end? The great news is that we sail all year round! The Winter series will commence on Sunday 2 May and run weekly until 27 July (except during NSW school holidays). 8:00am start with 3 races around 30-mins each. It’s a great way to maintain your sailing fitness and the early morning sail means you have the rest of the day to chill out or cook a Sunday roast!

Courses for the 1965/66 season:

NE - Start deep into Double Bay, top mark Nielsen Park, wing mark Taylor Bay, bottom mark Double Bay, Nielsen Park, Double Bay, Nielsen Park, Taylor Bay, finish Double Bay.

SE - Start off Clark Island, top mark deep into Double Bay, wing mark off Point Piper, bottom mark Shell Cove (near Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron), Double Bay, Nielsen Park, Shell Cove, finish Double Bay.

This may be difficult to replicate today due to the numerous crossings of the ferry routes but would make an interesting marathon course!
