LTR is Back This Saturday

Kirk Marcolina

Been craving the lessons and tips from our very own Champion, Martin White and his crack team of coaches? Your wait is over. Learn to Race is back on this Saturday, 17 October at 9am. It will then continue on the first and third Saturday of the month (except Jan 2). Come along if you want to learn more about Laser boat handling, balance, boat posture, trim, starts, tacks, gybes, boat set-up and any other race management fundamentals. Please email Martin White HERE if you are planning on attending.

Sign Up for State Masters Champs in Jervis Bay

Kirk Marcolina

We previously ran an Expression of Interest for those wishing to attend the State Masters Championship which is scheduled to be heled at Jervis Bay Sailing Club on 13 – 14 February 2021.

Accommodation options will run out quickly so once again, if you are interested in potentially attending the event,  please fill out the form HERE

We’re hoping to have a large DBSC contingent travel to this beautiful setting – along with family and friends. It should be a wonderful weekend away.

For those not quite sure if this event is suitable for them or you want some additional information on what it is like to attend the event, please contact rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au. Rod will be hosting an information session about the event this Saturday before racing at 12:30pm on the grass outside the club. Come along to hear more.

Big Boat Racing

Kirk Marcolina

Last Sunday we had a Big Boat race (postponed one week due to the October long weekend). It was a cracker of a day on the harbour with a 15-18 knot NE breeze, and sunny skies. Though only two boats participated, the day was enjoyable and competitive. Despite a close call with a Harbour Marker, Chenonceau was able to outpace Smitten to win the day. The Big Boats race again on Sunday, November 1 at 2pm.

Removal of Fuel Canisters

Kirk Marcolina

We have noticed a number of non-DBSC fuel canisters stored in various parts of the club, most notably in the vestibule to the women’s bathroom.

Storage of fuel at the club represents a fire hazard that we cannot permit. All DBSC fuel is stored in a fireproof locker, but there is no room in that locker for private fuel canisters.

If the fuel canisters shown in the photos below belong to you, can you please remove them by this coming Saturday, 17 October. Any non-DBSC fuel canisters remaining on that date will be removed and disposed.

If you wish to claim one of the below canisters and cannot get to the club before Saturday, please let the Commodore know by email HERE.

We appreciate your understanding and assistance with this.

Bin Your Waste Properly

Kirk Marcolina

We know it’s not glamorous, but we need everyone’s help to ensure the right stuff is going into the right bins. It may seem simple but sadly it’s not happening.

We have three different types of bins:

The BLUE bins are special “return and earn” recycling bins through which we earn money. The only items that can go in these bins are empty plastic bottles which have a readable barcode (i.e. water, sports drink, etc.) or beer bottles with readable barcodes on labels. Do not crush the bottles and cans as that makes the barcodes unreadable. These items cannot be co-mingled with other types of garbage. NO wine or spirit bottles are permitted. The blue bins should always be inside, except on the rare occasions they are full and are put out for collection.

The YELLOW bins take recyclables not included in Blue bins, including wine and spirit bottles, paper, and cardboard. Please make sure to flatten any boxes.

The RED bins are for non-recyclable general waste.

The yellow and red bins are kept in the club, except on sailing days when they are outside of the rollerdoor at its eastern side. At the end of the day they should be brought back inside.

We appreciate everyone’s contribution to our waste management and recycling efforts by focusing on these two simple requests – put uncrushed bottles and cans into the BLUE bins and always bring the bins inside if you notice them outside at the end of the day.

House Management Volunteer Needed

Kirk Marcolina

We’re looking for a House Management volunteer. The role is to keep the clubhouse organized and tidy — find a place to put everything and know where that is, tidy up as needed from time to time, print out paperwork for use each week (CSO sheets, sign on sheets, race record sheets), coordinate labelling instructions on various items as needed, provide input on what is needed at working bees, and coordinate occasional newsletter articles where specific matters need communication. It’s a great way to up your volunteer hours to help secure a lower rack placement. If you’re interested let Andrew Cox know HERE.

DBSC Racing at The UK Masters Nationals

Kirk Marcolina

As many know, Matt Knight and his family have relocated to England. Despite moving countries Matt sailed under the DBSC flag for the UK Masters Nationals last weekend.  Matt finished 10th (out of 23). Not a bad result after not sailing for 8 months. But it’s clear that Matt still needs to acquire the knack of sailing in colder waters… or just throw in the towel and return to DBSC in sunny Sydney ;)

Boat for Sale

Kirk Marcolina

$5,000 Negotiable

Laser Radial/Full Rig Sail Number 202818

Her name is "Jenny" (of Forest Gump fame) and really is the most beautiful boat on the water (Forrests words, and mine).

It is in great condition, built 2011, fast, bone dry on the inside, with a stiff hull and competitive.
I have been racing her as a full rig and I have all the spars and sails to set it up as a full rig or a radial rig.

The boat is fully kitted out with turbo vang, carbon mast top section, carbon tiller, centerboard and rudder bag.

1 x Radial Sail (good condition)
1 x Standard Sail (good condition)

I am sadly selling her as I don't get enough time to sail with my young family.

60 Seconds With Sylvie Stannage…

Kirk Marcolina

In honour of HSC exams staring next week, today we’re featuring another of our youth radial sailors. Year 12 student and Olympic hopeful, Sylvie Stannage.

1.              How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?

I think I started Tackers in the summer of 2013, so I was probably 10 years old. I really hated sailing for a couple of years and only really got into it when I was about 13.

2.              If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy?

I’m pretty sure they’re not in production anymore, but the Flying Phantom for sure – it’s an insane foiling catamaran that I would love to get my hands on one day.

3.              What is your sailing goal?

My goal is to go to the Olympics one day, or otherwise as long as the fabulous Brett Beyer can put up with coaching me.

4.              Tell us the back story to your laser's name?

This is an interesting one – my boat is called Little Miss Persist, and it comes from my first training session ever in a Laser. I was at HHSC, and we were sailing around Cockatoo Island when the wind completely died. I hate being towed, so I pumped all the way in, which took hours but earnt me my boat name. Some people might have seen on my DBSC Women’s Regatta entry, my dad put my boat name down as An Essay on Existentialism. I’m in year 12 and my English Extension 2 major work, which completely consumed my life for months, was, you guessed it, an essay on existentialism.

5.              If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties – what would it be?

Goat’s cheese with ash – the best food in the entire world.

6.              What are your second/ third favourite hobbies (obviously assuming sailing holds the #1 spot

I really love rock climbing and bouldering – I’ve done some pretty cool climbs up dam walls and cliffs in Spain, I can’t wait to get back there. My third favourite would have to be eating, I’m definitely a foodie, although I can’t cook, even if my life depended on it.

7.              Describe what you do for work in less than 5 words?

Well I coach sailing sometimes.

8.              What’s the first international flight you are going to book post Covid-19? And why?

It would definitely be a flight to France. I’m lucky enough to have lived and gone to school in rural France, and I’m really looking forward to going back to our house there and seeing all my friends once international travel starts again.

9.              What’s your favourite TV show, movie, and or book?

I know it’s basic, but Legally Blonde is just so good. My mum and I have probably watched it over 20 times, and we know the entire movie off by heart. If we’re talking books, I’d recommend The Plague by Albert Camus – even a year of writing about it in my major work couldn’t ruin it for me.

10.           Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know?

This is a tough one, because usually my interesting fact is that I sail, but I’d hope that everyone has figured that one out. I guess something that not everyone knows is that I love languages and I’m fluent in French and Spanish. I’m teaching myself Russian and I’m going to study it at ANU next year. Another is that I’m an ever-suffering supporter of the Fremantle Dockers in the AFL – an unpopular choice I know, but I’m holding out for when we win our first premiership when I’m 75 or something.
