House Management Volunteer Needed

Kirk Marcolina

We’re looking for a House Management volunteer. The role is to keep the clubhouse organized and tidy — find a place to put everything and know where that is, tidy up as needed from time to time, print out paperwork for use each week (CSO sheets, sign on sheets, race record sheets), coordinate labelling instructions on various items as needed, provide input on what is needed at working bees, and coordinate occasional newsletter articles where specific matters need communication. It’s a great way to up your volunteer hours to help secure a lower rack placement. If you’re interested let Andrew Cox know HERE.

DBSC Racing at The UK Masters Nationals

Kirk Marcolina

As many know, Matt Knight and his family have relocated to England. Despite moving countries Matt sailed under the DBSC flag for the UK Masters Nationals last weekend.  Matt finished 10th (out of 23). Not a bad result after not sailing for 8 months. But it’s clear that Matt still needs to acquire the knack of sailing in colder waters… or just throw in the towel and return to DBSC in sunny Sydney ;)

Boat for Sale

Kirk Marcolina

$5,000 Negotiable

Laser Radial/Full Rig Sail Number 202818

Her name is "Jenny" (of Forest Gump fame) and really is the most beautiful boat on the water (Forrests words, and mine).

It is in great condition, built 2011, fast, bone dry on the inside, with a stiff hull and competitive.
I have been racing her as a full rig and I have all the spars and sails to set it up as a full rig or a radial rig.

The boat is fully kitted out with turbo vang, carbon mast top section, carbon tiller, centerboard and rudder bag.

1 x Radial Sail (good condition)
1 x Standard Sail (good condition)

I am sadly selling her as I don't get enough time to sail with my young family.

60 Seconds With Sylvie Stannage…

Kirk Marcolina

In honour of HSC exams staring next week, today we’re featuring another of our youth radial sailors. Year 12 student and Olympic hopeful, Sylvie Stannage.

1.              How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?

I think I started Tackers in the summer of 2013, so I was probably 10 years old. I really hated sailing for a couple of years and only really got into it when I was about 13.

2.              If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy?

I’m pretty sure they’re not in production anymore, but the Flying Phantom for sure – it’s an insane foiling catamaran that I would love to get my hands on one day.

3.              What is your sailing goal?

My goal is to go to the Olympics one day, or otherwise as long as the fabulous Brett Beyer can put up with coaching me.

4.              Tell us the back story to your laser's name?

This is an interesting one – my boat is called Little Miss Persist, and it comes from my first training session ever in a Laser. I was at HHSC, and we were sailing around Cockatoo Island when the wind completely died. I hate being towed, so I pumped all the way in, which took hours but earnt me my boat name. Some people might have seen on my DBSC Women’s Regatta entry, my dad put my boat name down as An Essay on Existentialism. I’m in year 12 and my English Extension 2 major work, which completely consumed my life for months, was, you guessed it, an essay on existentialism.

5.              If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties – what would it be?

Goat’s cheese with ash – the best food in the entire world.

6.              What are your second/ third favourite hobbies (obviously assuming sailing holds the #1 spot

I really love rock climbing and bouldering – I’ve done some pretty cool climbs up dam walls and cliffs in Spain, I can’t wait to get back there. My third favourite would have to be eating, I’m definitely a foodie, although I can’t cook, even if my life depended on it.

7.              Describe what you do for work in less than 5 words?

Well I coach sailing sometimes.

8.              What’s the first international flight you are going to book post Covid-19? And why?

It would definitely be a flight to France. I’m lucky enough to have lived and gone to school in rural France, and I’m really looking forward to going back to our house there and seeing all my friends once international travel starts again.

9.              What’s your favourite TV show, movie, and or book?

I know it’s basic, but Legally Blonde is just so good. My mum and I have probably watched it over 20 times, and we know the entire movie off by heart. If we’re talking books, I’d recommend The Plague by Albert Camus – even a year of writing about it in my major work couldn’t ruin it for me.

10.           Tell us something interesting about yourself that members of the club don’t know?

This is a tough one, because usually my interesting fact is that I sail, but I’d hope that everyone has figured that one out. I guess something that not everyone knows is that I love languages and I’m fluent in French and Spanish. I’m teaching myself Russian and I’m going to study it at ANU next year. Another is that I’m an ever-suffering supporter of the Fremantle Dockers in the AFL – an unpopular choice I know, but I’m holding out for when we win our first premiership when I’m 75 or something.

Season kicks off in anger this coming Saturday, October 7

Webmaster

The mighty DBSC will kick-off the 2020/21 season this coming Saturday, October 7 with the first 2 heats of the Club Championships.

With very competitive fleets in all classes (thanks to prolonged Winter training ;) the season is sure to be a nail biter.

Unfortunately, there will be no Club Champ BBQ this week due to COVIDSafe restrictions which are still in place.

A reminder to all attending the club that you

  • must register with the CSO (Covid Safety Officer) immediately upon arrival

  • must not use the dressing rooms or bathrooms (either arrive and leave in your sailing pyjamas, or change into them in the boat park)

  • must use hand sanitizer

  • must maintain no more than 10 persons in the club at any one time

Canteen open for business!

Webmaster

Good news for all those experiencing withdrawal symptoms from our “world famous toasties” – we will be opening the canteen this weekend!

Please note, there will be new protocols in place and it is important that everyone observes them.

NO ONE IS TO APPROACH THE CANTEEN OR ACCESS THE FRIDGE NEAR THE CANTEEN.

There will be an ordering station set up in the park and a canteen volunteer will take orders and radio them to the canteen (“Double Bay, Double Bay - 1 toastie with the lot. Over.”).  The ordering station will also have an esky full of drinks to allow you to purchase your drinks there too.

There will be NO CASH – all orders will be written up in the tab-book by the canteen volunteer, and you will be invoiced periodically throughout the season.

We are excited to have the canteen back in operation and are delighted to have Paul and Shirley back at the club!  We have missed the feeling of “home” that their presence creates.

Subscriptions due: October 31, 2020

Webmaster

As reported earlier in the year club membership fees that are normally due in April each year were deferred until further notice. This was due to COVID-related concerns in relation to financial uncertainty across the nation.

A number of members have voluntarily paid their fees already, which has been appreciated to provide the club with cash flow as we incur most of our large expenses over the Winter months.

For those who have not yet paid, we are now calling for payment of fees with a due date of 31 October 2020.

We understand that some members are still experiencing financial hardship – please let the Commodore know if you need additional time.

If you cannot remember if you have paid or not, please check with the Treasurer by emailing here.

As a 100% volunteer run club, paying your fees on time saves a lot of paperwork and valuable volunteer time. We appreciate your collective assistance here.

Twilight sail tonight!

Webmaster

Twilights start tonight! The splash will be 1700 for 1730 starts. (However as per last season, there are plenty of people usually ready to sail from about 1700)

We are encouraging a big turnout to replicate the fleets of 20+ boats achieved last season.

Tonight will not be a BBTP (Brett Beyer Twilight Program) event – but we will still have organised racing with marks placed.

The BBTP will be back, starting next week – see below.

Sign-on for the Brett Beyer Twilight Program now!

Webmaster

On the dates indicated below, Brett Beyer will run the very popular twilight sailing program, comprising racing and/or drills from 17:30-19:30.

All members are welcome to participate in the racing and drills.  Program subscribers will receive on-water coaching during the event, as well as a written general fleet-level summary of the evening’s sailing. Brett will endeavour to provide approximately equal on-water attention to all participants – see the terms and conditions of the program HERE.

The program will run for 9 sessions (every Wed from 14 Oct to 16 Dec, except not 9 Dec).

The cost will be $360 for all 9 sessions.

If you are interested, please get your ticket HERE – note there are only 10 tickets available, first in best dressed!
