Big Boat Race Report

Guest User

It was a classic early autumn afternoon on the Harbour.

The 18s ‘world championships’, their JJ Giltinans, were on and I heard stories of their first race, the day before. There was also a Sydney Harbour regatta with multiple fleets, so many that start boat volunteers were having a hard time picking which was their pin. Protests were being prepared. And of course the DBSC BIG boats. The Clubhouse was crowded, Paul and his catering group were busy, busy. Small repairs were being done on the grass

It was sunny and autumn-warm. A classic Sydney sea breeze, nor-east, blew all weekend.

Corinna, G-Force, Sanity, Smitten, T&T  all presented for the start; our line is fixed and in a nor-easterly we have to cross the line on port. That all happened with manoeuvrings and judgements; Corinna won the start, then T&T and G-ForceSanity and Smitten.

T&T was late because - we were late; her skipper misjudged time by 15 seconds; Sanity because she had to give way to a starboard tack boat; Smitten, because she was late to the starting area and had only just unfurled her headsail!

So, Corinna led us on port tack across Double Bay, for our mark at Point Piper - faithfully laid by Peter Collie and Gerard Cafe, from an RIB (thank you)! Sanity is a beautiful boat, fast as a modern 34ft cruiser-racer should be, and her skipper has been winning trophies since the 1950s. She edged past Corinna on this leg, to lead us around the first mark, followed by Corinna, G-Force, T&T, Smitten. The leg to Taylors bay was a very close reach; some boats went a bit higher, some lower; the race was on for second place but places didn’t change.

The last upwind leg was again classic Harbour. Sanity went left, looking for a lift and breeze around Chowder Head. The rest of us went right, to the east side of the Harbour where there is hope of an easterly lift coming over a saddle in the Harbour’s South Head, into Watson’s Bay. We sailed hard through fleet after fleet to get to Watson’s Bay and still there were no place changes. Except that T&T briefly overtook G-Force and closed on Corinna, so that those three were all close at the top mark.

The leg to Shark Island was a square-to-broad reach, sometimes a dead run, as always. Sanity didn’t need to set a spinnaker to maintain her long lead; Corinna had to protect her second place and did need to set a spinnaker to be sure of it. G-Force took time to set hers and T&T  came past her goose-winged. But once the spinnakers were set it became a contest between the two kited boats for second. The contest lasted through the gybe at Shark Island and was decided back in Double Bay where G-Force struggled with her kite. Corinna pulled away and, very close to the line, T&T slid through into third, profiting from G-Force’s misfortune.

Back at the Clubhouse we rehydrated and talked it all through, tidied up the last of the Clean-Up Australia jobs as the 18 footers came in. And all was done.

Across the line:

  •  Sanity

  • Corinna

  • Time & Tide

  • G-Force

  • Smitten

We race next on April 7.

Kirk Marcolina

DBSC is once again participating in Clean-Up Australia Day,thanks to the leadership of Jonathan Stone. Please come to the club for an hour or so between 11am to 2pm to help remove litter from the beaches around the club. Thanks for your support of the club’s efforts to be a good community partner in this important event.

Rainy Race Report

Kirk Marcolina

A rainy, gusty, shifty Southerly presented itself to a fleet of nearly 50 boats last Saturday for Club Championship heats 11 & 12 and Autumn Pointscore heats 5 & 6. With massive shifts, you had to continually be monitoring the wind to come out a winner.

The results were: Championship– Standards: David Newman (Championship Heat 11) and Marty Trembath (Championship Heat 12); Radials: Campbell Patton (Championship Heats 11 & 12); 4.7s: Ian Louis (Championship Heats 11 & 12).  Pointscore(after handicap): Standards: Thomas Beregi (Pointscore Heat 5) and Rod Barnes (Pointscore Heat 6); Radial / 4.7s: Ashton Scott (Pointscore Heat 5) and Emily Ball (Pointscore Heat 6). Thanks to this week’s race volunteers — Jonathan Stone (PRO) and Clare Alexander on the Jazzman, Michael Osborne and Christine Linharton the RIBs, and Alistair Sutherland in the canteen.

After racing we enjoyed a beautiful BBQ at the club thanks to the Canteen Crew and Pat and Peter on the grill!

Piling Project Support

Kirk Marcolina

Member for Vaucluse, Gabrielle Upton MP, visited to the club last weekend to present a cheque for $24,000. The money is from the NSW Government to replace aging piles underneath the clubhouse. This support is vital in ensuring the longevity of our historic boat shed. We are grateful to the NSW Government for the funding and thank Ms Upton for her continued support of our club.

Canteen Craziness – Help Needed Sunday 10 March

Kirk Marcolina

Sunday March 10this the last day of the JJs, and one of the most frantic days of the year in the DBSC canteen. Post racing and pre-presentation/closing party there is nothing for the 18s sailors to do other than eat pies and other goodies cooked up by the canteen crew. It would be wonderful to get several volunteers to help in the kitchen and with tidy up on the afternoon of the 10th.  Please let Paul Adam know if you can help!

Marlena Berzins Pathway Program

Kirk Marcolina

One of the club’s strategic objectives is to get more members to the start line each weekend.  We know that our start lines can be quite intimidating for new-ish sailors (and even some experienced sailors), as boats jostle for position, rules are yelled back and forth, and the occasional bump or scrape occurs!

We have consulted with some of our LTR participants, and have developed a new pathway program to transition our sailors from the Learn to Race program onto the start line each week.  Marlena Berzins has agreed to coach this program, and we are inviting six of our female sailors to trial the program in three sessions that will be held during the remainder of this season.

Our plan is to run this program in small groups on an ongoing basis starting next season, with all our “pathway” sailors being provided an opportunity to participate over time.  We will communicate more details of the ongoing program in the lead up to next season.

VYC “Old Boys” Regatta

Kirk Marcolina

VYC has decided to run a Scots vs Cranbrook “Old Boys” Regatta, which they have asked us to advertise to our members.  The regatta will be held on Sunday, 17 March 2018, which is the same weekend as the Metros. If people are interested in attending this VYC Regatta, details and registration are available here.

Stellar Sprints

Kirk Marcolina

Over thirty boats sailed in Sprint Racing last Saturday. It was a unique course set close to the mouth of Double Bay and in the shadow of the F50 Catamaran races. A moderate NE breeze and warm sunny skies set a beautiful backdrop to over two hours of sprints. Thanks to Mark Crowhurst, Richard George, and Diana Chen for running a great day on the water and to the Canteen Crew who were supported by Murray Stone this week.
