The best ILCA / Laser sailing club in the world, located in Double Bay on Sydney Harbour.
Several members are headed to the Open and Youth NSW & ACT Laser State Championships this weekend at Canberra Yacht Club. Join the fleet in our nation’s capital by signing up HERE. If you don’t make the trip, there will be sprints on at Double Bay on Saturday, with a normal start time.
A heads-up that a photoshoot has been booked from 9-1 today (Wednesday 21 November) at the club. They won’t be too disruptive as there are only four people involved but we wanted to let you know in case you were planning any major work around the clubhouse.

Rob Greenhalgh has generously donated his time to be the inaugural speaker at our new Sailing Stories series that we are co-hosting with the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club (RPEYC). Rob, a professional round-the-world Volvo Ocean Racer and competitive Moth sailor, will be speaking at 7pm on 22 November 2018 at RPEYC, 160 Wolseley Road, Point Piper.
Tickets to the event are limited and we only have a few left, so hurry and book here. The ticket price will cover the cost of the food that will be served by RPEYC on arrival at 7pm, so get there on time to enjoy what will be quite a spread. Drinks will be available for purchase at the bar.

Last Wednesday Twilight sailing saw a wind speed of zero knots which resulted in no boats splashing off. There were 6 intrepid sailors ready to submit to Neptune’s wishes but it was not to be. The lack of wind didn’t stop Brett Beyer from using the time to effectively impart some great tips to the sailors. He spoke for more than an hour providing sailing insights and answering questions.
Today we’re looking forward to getting out on the water and putting Brett’s ideas into action. Everyone’s welcome to partake of this great opportunity to improve skills in a less formal environment than weekend racing. Splash is at 5pm!
The first leg of the 2018/19 Vaucluse Challenge took place last Saturday. A beautiful day and a challenging and shifty 7 – 12 knot SE breeze greeted the DBSC and VYC sailors who competed on a great course set in the neutral waters off Rose Bay. It was a great day of sailing with the usual competitive spirit and friendly rivalry between the clubs.
After an hour of scrutineering by the two club Commodores, the results were finally settled. They proved that the new, highly complex scoring system is making the Challenge more competitive this year. In fact, in the standards, the clubs were tied with 82 points each – DBSC won convincingly in the first race (33 vs 49 points), but lost equally badly in the second, primarily due to Vaucluse having positions 1, 2, 3 and 5 out of the top 8 finishers overall. In the radials, DBSC won convincingly with 45 points to VYC’s 79, beating VYC both overall and in every age division but one. This gave DBSC an overall win in the first leg of the challenge – 127 vs 161 points.
After the competition on the harbour, DBSC welcomed a sizable contingent of sailors from Vaucluse to a BBQ on our deck. The meal was delicious, however the culinary crew pointed out that several DBSC members started to eat before our guest from VYC had arrived. They have asked everyone to please refrain from doing so in the future. Thanks to VYC for a well-run and enjoyable day of sailing and to Andrea, Shirley, Peter and Pat for a great meal. Thanks also to Jerry, Dene and Clare for their support on the water.

We missed the familiar face of Paul Adam in the canteen on the weekend. Paul experienced some medical issues late last week and was instructed to rest on the weekend. Our thoughts are with him and we wish him all the best! Thank you to Andrea and Shirley who stepped up in the canteen, along with Dave Rogers, who volunteered at short notice. And thanks to Clare who helped with supplies during the week.
During last weekend’s BBQ, besides the normal frivolities, the group raised a glass to Andrea and Dene Bergman who were celebrating 55 wonderful years together. Congratulations to the happy couple.

Two of our members are showing off their creative skills this week. Fist up, Kirk Marcolina’s documentary about the history of marriage equality in Australia will air on SBS on Thursday, 15 November at 7:30pm. A few days later, on Saturday 17 November at 7pm, Hadrien Bourely’s band, Napoleonic, is playing upstairs at Red Bar, 36 Glebe Point Road. Come along after sailing for the gig! And get there early (like 6.30pm) because the venue is going to be at capacity!!
The NSW & ACT Laser State Championships are on 24-25 November at Canberra Yacht Club. CYC is a fabulous club and we have been promised good sailing conditions so this is an event not to be missed.
