Open Air Cinema for Steyne Park?

Guest User

There is a Development Application before Council (DA 393/2016) to hold open air cinema in Steyne Park, every Thursday to Sunday night.  Setting up from 5.30pm, with booze and food.

The proposal will no doubt make parking even more difficult and increase wear and tear on our beloved Steyne park.   The alfresco lavatories (ie dinghy racks) will probably see more activity. I worry about security when there is boozed people around, but that's probably not our biggest issue.

Comments can be lodged here. They are due today, but I am sure late submissions will be accepted and considered.

Application is here

Daylight Saving = Twilight Sailing

Guest User

It's back.

Wednesday twilight sailing starts this week

Aim for a 5.30 splash, some will go earlier, and sail for as long as you like. We may sail sprints around a simple course, either using DBSC buoys, or the fixed buoys in the harbour. One of the sailors will act as starter.

All welcome and encouraged.

Occasionally, such as today, there's a Committee meeting on after sailing. Again, all welcome to join us for a natter and a slice of pizza.

PS Its late notice, but there's a lovely westerly brewing for today.....

Two years ago it was a lovely N/Eer. You're reminded because I don't know how to remove prior pictures.

Yoof for glorious benefit of DBSC

Webmaster

Just some of the yoof spending the school holidays wisely.

Just some of the yoof spending the school holidays wisely.

The People's Prince, glowed:

"We are used to Grasshopper 2.0 and Smiley delivering in the big regattas, but the highlight for me was the performance of the 4.7 team.  We have gone from a lone 4.7 rig two seasons ago, to being the leading 4.7 club in Australia now.  We don't just have the odd undernourished adult sailor now, we have a whole yoof squad in the 4.7s."

Report follows:

NSW Youth championships wrapped up today with a massive NE breeze... Only one race finished before they sent the sailors ashore.

Results- Radial
Finn - almost a picket fence with a 2,1,1,1,1 (the 2nd was his drop) with total score of 4 and taking the win.
Marlena - 6th

4.7
Will Cooley- 2nd
Boston Cortis- 3rd
Jack Littlechild- 4th
Mark Louis - 8th
Brooke Wilson - 16th
Henry Davison - 21st
Will McMillian - 23rd

Saturday was blown out with no racing.
Sunday they jammed in as many races as they could in anticipation for Monday's weather.
Monday's weather didn't disappoint and only 1 race was completed! It was wild and fun!

Grasshopper 2.0 on the podium and not the picket fence.

Wonderful Worker's Celebration Weekend..Club Championships this weekend

Guest User

What a long weekend...with all sorts of weather.

Things are getting busier now summer is really here:

  • More yachts on the harbour, some of whom randomly apply by the "starboard boat has right of way over port boat, unless Port boat is bigger" rule.
  • Irrefutable evidence that boat handling skills of owners are inversely proportional to the length of the boat.
  • the Island season is underway, providing distraction to the mental preparation of many at DBSC
  • Wednesday twilight sailing at DBSC, although a strong southerly buster might cause issues this week

Boarding the Island's shuttle is precarious and requires vigilant oversight. Matt selflessly delayed his sailing on Saturday to make sure each and every lady was safe. Good job Matt

This coming Saturday we have Club Championships.  Usual course and time.  We expect a bumper roll up.

Workers' struggle celebrations

Guest User

October long weekend brings several celebrations

  • Annual day of rest and celebration for the workers
  • NRL grand final
  • Closure of the ski season
  • AFL grand final (a passing fad for Sydney workers)
  • Last weekend before parents can hand daytime custody back to teachers
  • Daylight savings implemented, robbing us of an hour's sleep (or an hour's drinking if you're still at uni)

Implications for DBSC members are:

  1. Informal non Pointscore racing this weekend.  Probably sprints, possibly 6-8 races. probably 2 lap windward /leewards, potentially about 20 minutes each race, likely with 3 minute start sequence (4.7s start on 2 mins, radials on 1 min, standards on 0).  But there will certainly probably be some changes to this plan.
  2. Weekly Wednesday night twilight sailing starts on Wednesday 7 October and continues throughout daylight savings. Celebrate hump day with a sail.  Aim for a 5.30pm splash. Very informal sprints, often rabbit starts (we'll explain on the day), all welcome.

4.7's flourishing, starts compressing

Guest User

We've built quite the fleet of 4.7's. Well done kids. So much so, they've earned their own start. No longer will they be gassed by radials off the start.

Now that we've got 3 starts per race, we're going to have to jam the fleets closer together....watch out for one start being the 5 minute warning for the next fleet.

On-water volunteers needed too!

Webmaster

Details of the jobs needing to be filled.

If you know someone who likes the great outdoors, likes sailing or just wants a useful hobby, DBSC is looking for volunteers to help on-the-water.

Members should canvas not only friends but also their loved ones.  Maybe your parents who used to be helicopter parents can get involved again during your adult years?  Maybe you have an aunt who has lots of cats, and talks to herself, who wants to meet new people?

Without PRO, COTD and CoCOTD volunteers we just don't race.

Call out for Canteen Crew

Guest User

We're asking/begging for help for the canteen on Saturdays.

Our Canteen Crew Captain, Paul, is going to be unavailable for some weeks during the season (including this week) and we're calling for crew to help out.

If you can volunteer even a few hours, please have a word with Andrea (filling in this week), Paul, or anyone on the Politburo.  It will be very much appreciated.

Racing continues 2pm Saturdays

Guest User

The first 2 weeks have been gusty, windy westerlies. Very testing conditions.  It certainly won't be the same this week. get down and enjoy a sail in the sunshine.

At time of writing your correspondent is reading tea leafs and indications are for sunny skies and a Nor Easter. Fingers crossed.

1.00pm - briefing

1.30pm - splash

2.00pm - first starting signal.

GPS Race Tracking

Jules Hall

There's been plenty of chat on the DBSC deck about implementing some form of GPS Race Tracking. So, we are going to initiate a trial using a free tool called RaceQS - it's an app that you install on a smartphone.

To get the best possible data we would like as many members as possible to participate.  To participate, please do the following:

  1. Get a waterproof case for your smartphone (if you don't trust the waterproof-ness of the case you might like to use an old phone, buy a used phone form eBay, or get a cheap Android handset)
  2. Download the RaceQS app
  3. Log onto RaceQS website http://raceqs.com/ and set up a profile.  NOTE: USE THE FOLLOWING NAMING FORMAT FOR YOUR BOAT NAME IN YOUR PROFILE:
    If you sail a full/standard rig: F-FIRSTNAMELASTNAME-DBSC
If you sail a radial: R-FIRSTNAMELASTNAME-DBSC,
    If you sail a 4.7: 4.7-FIRSTNAMELASTNAME-DBSC.
  4. Bring your device down to the club on Saturday.  You can 'preset' the start so your device only tracks from 2pm.
  5. Race Committee/Super Users will upload courses and pull boats into each class post-races, with the goal of being able to watch race replays together back at the club over a beer - spotting the shifts we missed!

Michael Gentry will give everyone a quick overview at the briefing this coming Saturday (10th September) and will be able to answer any questions.
