DBSC provides lots of events and opportunities throughout the sailing year for wives, husbands, partners or your least hostile acquaintance but this annual dinner is dedicated to the DBSC sailors and regular volunteers of the club. 

The cost of the evening is $90 which includes 2 course dinner (and a share cheese platter), wine with dinner (while it lasts) and open bar on arrival (also while it lasts), with cash bar once the kitty runs out! The evening also includes some fun and frivolity – you won’t want to miss out this year!  

As always, there is a Dress-up theme – As DBSC is setting sail for this event offsite at RPEYC we want you to  cast your memory back to a group of people who also set sail on an adventure of a lifetime. In Gilligan’s Island we watched Seven people set sail on The Minnow but got caught in a storm and end up stranded on an uncharted tropical island together. While we are not going to get shipwrecked - This year we encourage you to come dressed as your favourite character from Gilligan’s Island!

The 7 characters included:

•  the happy-go-lucky skipper, Skipper

• his bumbling but well-meaning first mate, Gilligan 

• a snobby well-to-do millionaire, Thurston Howell III and his wife, Lovey

• a buxom sexy movie star bombshell, Ginger 

• a high-school science professor, "The Professor" 

• and a nice country girl, Mary Ann. 

We need to add that there will be a follow on venue and ask that people RSVP for that so we can gauge interest and put names on the door to assure entry. Previously people who were part of our group have not been able to get into the venue other members were already in.  The venue is Bedouin, 53 Cross St. Double Bay. If you RSVP you name will be on the door. There is a quiet area and a dancing area.

Viva BrisVegas. Aka Old blokes head north

Geoff Kirk, Luke Parker, along with super coach Brett Beyer, and occasional winter sailing radial guest Craig Davis travelled to the four day South Pacific laser masters championships at RQYS last weekend.

The weather was a mixed bag. Day 1 was a drifter with massive wind shifts and inconsistencies, Day 2 bought 3 long races in a solid 18 to 25+ knots, day 3 was a glass out until late 5 knot sea breeze filled in for one race, and day 4 was blown out with no racing possible.

As usual, Brett gave a masterclass across all conditions and discarded a “1” - picket fence. Luke and Geoff had good regattas and both finished in the top 10.

It was a well run regatta, hosted at a strong and organised club, with an onsite hotel and great cafes within walking distance. Of particular note, the change rooms would make our Commodore swoon. They’re seriously flash.

The SPLM is an annual event and well worth the trip north.

The Notice of Race has been released for the 2020 Australian Laser Championships (NB - this is the Open Championships, not the Masters for which most of the club will be after), to be held at Sandringham from January 1 to 8. This will be the first event in an amazing summer of Laser sailing in Victoria, so you are encouraged to get your entry in NOW.

If your entry is received before August 31, 2019, you will go in the draw to win a brand new Laser, including the rig of your choice, courtesy of the major sponsor PSA.

14 July - Bastille Day. And Sunday morning Winter series heats 16-18!

24 August - The annual club working bee will be held on Saturday 24 August. All members are expected to attend and help get the club ship shape for season start in September.

30 August - The Sailors and Volunteers Season Opening Dinner is on again. Lock it in your social calendars now. It will be HUGE.

28,29 September - DBSC will host the DBSC Women’s Laser Regatta for a 2nd year running. Volunteers from the club make this event truly unique, so plan to get involved over some or all of this weekend!

Mark Bethwaite awarded the Barranjoey pin

On Saturday night we were privileged to witness one of our own receiving the Barranjoey pin at the Australian Sailing Awards at the CYCA.

Mark Bethwaite received his pin in recognition for his 2 x Olympic campaigns and his continuous competitive sailing. Sir James Hardy (who also received his pin) pinned this to Mark’s jacket. The tradition is that one Barranjoey pin recipient puts the pin onto the next one to receive the pin.

The Barranjoey pin program launched to recognise Australia's greatest sailors. 

The uniquely numbered pins will be presented around the country this year and next to those athletes who have represented and continue to represent Australia at the highest levels in sailing. It is named after the yacht ‘Barranjoey’, which was sailed to Australia’s first Olympic sailing gold medal, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

A very special moment, and another reminder of how deep the talent in the club runs, and also how lucky we are to have such a highly decorated sailor in our midst!

The depth of talent at DBSC keeps getting deeper!

Madeline O’Shea – Laser Radial – just raced amongst 105 female radial sailors at the Laser Radial Youth European championships this week and came 14th overall – with 8 x top ten results!! Congrats Madeline!

Henry flies the red, white and blue in Kiel - scores bronze

Our youth member – Otto Henry raced at Kiel Week in Germany this week flying the flag for DBSC and has won the Bronze medal in a 125 Radial fleet!! Woohoo.

As we started setting up the course in what was predicted to be a typical westerly following the 25 knot winds of the previous day we were feeling too warm and noticed the wind turning to the south. We set up a short southerly course in a genteel 3-7 knot breeze and started about 10 boats in each fleet. After a shortened finish in the first race we made the course even shorter for the second as the wind dropped. Ultimately we shortened this race at the top mark on the second work where the fleet was closest to home and did not run the third race. Later in the afternoon a nice breeze came up but too late for us.

Lets hope for good wind for the last two races of this series.

Patton to compete for his country at Youth Worlds

Rising DBSC star Campbell Patton has won the right to represent Bermuda in the Laser Radial class at  World Sailing’s Youth Worlds. 

The Youth Worlds are in Gdynia, Poland from July 13 to 20.

Campbell has been working very hard toward this goal, and we wish him the very best. Go Campbell!

Campbell & Clare - award nominees

Two members of the Double Bay Sailing Club have been shortlisted for NSW+ACT Sailing Awards.

Clare Alexander has been nominated for the Shesails award, and Campbell Patton for the Youth Sailor of the Year award.

We wish both Campbell and Clare best of luck at the award ceremony to be held at the CYCA on July 6.
