Race Report - Strengthening Southerly

Kirk Marcolina

It’s becoming all too common this season – a strengthening Southerly that likes to shift, gust and die all within a few seconds. These tricky conditions were met head on by a fleet of 46 boats for the penultimate day of the 2018 Spring Point Score Series. With gusts of over 25-knots and lulls of 9-knots, sailors needed to have a keen eye toward the ever-changing conditions.

The winners (after handicapping) were as follows: in the Standards, Ashley Deacon and Kevin Gilroy, in the Radials/4.7s, David Rogers and Marlena Berzins. With only two more heats to come, the competition is tight in the Radials/4.7 Fleet, where Peter Collie leads over Matthew Knight by only 0.5 points, with Pat Levy only 2 points behind. In the Standards, Ashley Deacon has a sizeable 12-point lead over Hadrien Bourely.

Thank you to our PRO, Andrew Craker, assisted by Christine Patton, our COTD, Peter Collie, and CoCOTD, Mark Grey, assisted by Mark’s daughter and David Devlin.  And thanks to Richard Lees and Campbell Patton who helped Shirley in the canteen.

No Wind for Twilights? No Worries.

Kirk Marcolina

Last Wednesday Twilight sailing saw a wind speed of zero knots which resulted in no boats splashing off. There were 6 intrepid sailors ready to submit to Neptune’s wishes but it was not to be. The lack of wind didn’t stop Brett Beyer from using the time to effectively impart some great tips to the sailors. He spoke for more than an hour providing sailing insights and answering questions.

Today we’re looking forward to getting out on the water and putting Brett’s ideas into action. Everyone’s welcome to partake of this great opportunity to improve skills in a less formal environment than weekend racing. Splash is at 5pm!
