DBSC was founded in 12 July 1956.  Wonderful article about the origins of the club here

We'll be celebrating the 60th anniversary on 3 June 2016 (note the change from original date) at our Gala AGM/prize giving/birthday party.

Plans, details, invites etc all to follow, but at this time you should block out Friday night 3 June.  Formalities will be de minimis, but food, dance music and beverage opportunities will be de maximis.  Council approval is in place for the party to rock between 7pm and 4am.

Wise folk/ seasoned campaigners will also pencil in a later start on the 4th.

Adam Smith was right....kind of.

DBSC v VYC: 38 v 79......but DBSC had home advantage.

DBSC v VYC: 38 v 79......but DBSC had home advantage.

Success in the first leg of this year's edition of the Rolex Vaucluse Challenge (RVC) can be attributed largely to the adoption of one of Adam Smith's finest principles: the benefits of specialisation.  We all use the same hull, and even as Adam Smith predicted, our Centre of Engineering Excellence has tools specially designed for Laser sailor use.

However, like fundamentalism, specialisation needs to be tempered.  Tempering was done by diversification of sailors rather than hull.  The process started in 2001/2002 season when the club welcomed radial sailors. It then quickly snowballed: vegetarians; woman-folk (sailors and not just in the "fine Ladies' Auxiliary”); “yoof”; economic refugees from Europe;  4.7 sailors; et cetera.

However, the process almost stalled when the question of accepting investment bankers into our worker’s paradise arose.  The tough decision was made, and it turned out exceptionally well with both applicants becoming highly accretive members.  (Troublemaker is heading to hospital this week. We understand it is reductive surgery for lifestyle reasons. One wonders to what extent this correlates with his underlying nomenclature?)

The après sailing spread laid on by VYC was a gourmand's dream...pesto chicken, gourmet snags, pasta, several salads, crusty bread, home baked chockie cake, a lovely cheese plate (tastefully garnished with crackers, grapes etc), and a boat full of a variety of beers.  The Commodore took photos, but his loving daughter despatched his phone to the harbour floor on Sunday prior to filing. Fair to say, VYC put up a great claim for the VYC/ DBSC Plate.

A fabulous, and successful, RVC Saturday....enjoy the photos that survived.

A shout out to Woody Winning for collecting the chocolates at round 6 of the NSW State Championships on Sunday.  Steering the mighty Yandoo, he led from Start to Finish, beating all the younger and more fancied crews.  Woody seems to have given tips to Paul McCartney when Sir Paul was sailing his laser off Middle Head in the 70's.  You'll note Paul's adoption of the 18's approach to PDFs.

The bookie from the ferry was seen dancing, albeit with very heavy pockets, through Steyne Park later that night.

Life Member Update: epidural, welcome back and asked to leave

The Wise Master

In a medical first, The Wise Master had his hip replacement done under an epidural rather than a general anaethestic. Explaining why, he elaborated:

"Orthopaedic surgery is like carpentry which will be painted over.  I wanted to make sure that not too much medical grade "builder's bog" was being used.  Also, I brought a couple of files with me in case there needed to be a little extra fitting required."

Operation went well and after a few more days rest in hospital, The Wise Master will relocate to Lady Davidson Hospital where there will be a enough rehabilitation over a fortnight to ensure that he will be able to recommence his other hobby of mixed martial arts.

PB welcomed back

After a long break, Peter B visited the club on Saturday.  Typical of Life Members, he couldn't just sit down and enjoy the view from the deck, he volunteered to help out.  PB helped run the Saturday Sprint Series aboard Jazzman.  Everyone agreed, we want to see PB back more often!

Asked to Leave

While DBSC Life Members volunteer by just rolling-up their sleeves and doing the work, it isn't always appreciated elsewhere.  Dear Leader who went into hospital on Thursday was kicked out on Saturday.

DBSC's Honorary Chief Medical Officer, and St Vincient's media superstar, da Dr G explained:

"Thursday went well, but by Friday AM Dear Leader had decided that that ward needed to be reorganised, and by Friday PM he wanted the whole hospital organisation restructured.  While many of his ideas are really good, you can't insist on a breakfast meeting with hospital's board on a Saturday morning. Hence, he had to go."

Given DBSC thrives by having volunteers, so we want all our Life Members at the club on Saturday afternoons!

....not a Life Member, but made 2015 NSW Senior of the Year.

Our uber cool, da Dr G was honoured this week.  In a congratulatory telex, our country's paramount leader said:

"Lucy and I are so pleased, that da Dr G has been recognised for his work dealing with the aftermath of Australia's (and backpacker) drug and alcohol effected detritus.  We all know that the emergency department on hospitals should be filled on weekend with sportsmen and women, and not overdoses and the results of violence."

State Titles - transport needed...

Jules Hall

There a couple of people looking for transport to the state titles this weekend at Lake Macquarie. If you have space on your trailer/roof and want someone to contribute to petrol (and keep you awake on the way home) then the following are looking lifts:
