Big Boat/Keel Boat Racing

An important part of DBSC's program is a series of races for keelboats. This is a much newer fleet for us; dinghy racing began in 1959, the keel boat races began only in 2008. But it is a growing fleet of yachts from 22 to 43ft.

Currently there are three series of races planned - Spring, Autumn and Spinnaker; see our racing program. While the atmosphere is relaxed and happy, you have to sail fast, well and lucky to win; which is as things should be.

The races are all handicap races; they are sailed monthly (usually the first Sunday in the month). The present course is takes us well around the main harbour; and the race is followed by drinks and food at the Club house.

Visiting sailors are welcome; the best way to make contact is with the Big Boat Rep, Jonathan Stone, by email (jonstone@eye.usyd.edu.au). You will receive a prompt reply, advice of races, courses and instructions.

Notes on the course:

Start:
Time: The start will be at 1.00pm outside of daylight saving periods, and 2.00pm during daylight saving.
Location: A simultaneous start is planned, from the area between the green pole at the south end of Clarke Island and the Darling Point wharf, heading east. Timing will be provided either from the wharf at Darling Point, or from a Club boat.

If the start is signalled from the wharf the start line will extend from the wharf to the green pole at the south end of Clarke Island.
If the start is signalled from a Club boat, the start line will be between the boat and the green pole.

Flags and sequence: The OoD will use flags to time the start, as follows:
. At 5 minutes before the start, the Club flag will be raised.
. At 4 minutes, the blue peter will be raised.
. At 1 minute, the blue peter will be dropped.
. At 0 minutes, the DBSC flag will be dropped.

Course:
As recently:
. Start as above, heading east.
. Then leave a Club mark near PPYA mark to port
. Leave Taylor's Bay YA mark to starboard.
. Leave YA mark just south of Sow'n Pigs reef to starboard.
. Leave YA mark at south end of Shark Island to starboard
. Finish line will be the same as the start line.
